Manasseh Azure Awuni, a Ghanaian investigative journalist, has called out the Ghana Education Service (GES) over the handling of the alleged sexual abuse of female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School by their headmaster.

The investigative journalist detailed how an inquiry set up by the Ghana Education Service (GES) into the alleged sexual abuse rather targeted teachers who stood up for the affected students.

Manasseh Azure Awuni further disclosed how five girls who were allegedly assaulted by the headmaster in March this year were forced to remain silent after filing complaints.

Speaking on JoyNews, Manasseh Azure detailed, “I went to speak to the director of Education for Obuasi; he confirmed that as early as March this year he received complaints and he called that the girls be brought. Five girls who said they were sexually assaulted by the Headmaster came over; three of them actually came over with written report of their assault. Were their cases investigated? No.

In July, a young lady filed a complaint against the headmaster. Then in June, there was an alleged sexual assault. In July, a young lady who said she had washed her things and went to pick them up, the headmaster invited her to come and run around for him. And when she got to the house, or the headmaster’s bungalow, he locked her inside and sexually assaulted her. The reports are very many”.

“…But we know this happened last year; similar things happened throughout this year. And then some of the girls said some house mistresses actually told them not to tell anybody when their issues came up. Some of the parents who had the courage to report to the police also told me about frustrations they faced,” he said.

Manasseh disclosed that the said teachers were pressured to leave the school to make way for new ones, while the interdicted headmaster was allegedly quietly transferred to another school.

He further disclosed that he had received several reports of alleged sexual assault involving the interdicted headmaster while he was an assistant headmaster at Toase Senior High School.

“The GES set up a committee, and it looked like that committee was rather trying to victimise the teachers who stood up for the girls. They had received calls to leave the school and find new schools, while this headmaster was going to be quietly transferred to another school.

“I can tell you on authority that I’ve spoken to people who knew this headmaster from Toase Senior High School; he was an assistant headmaster there. And they tell me that what they are hearing about him in Obuasi Senior High School isn’t new and that similar things happened in Toase Senior High School, where he was an assistant headmaster,” he added.

In related news, the case involving the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, popularly known as Paapaa, has taken a new turn after the case docket was forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Office for study and advice.

The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ashanti South Regional Police Command in Bekwai has forwarded the case docket to the Attorney-General’s Office for study and advice.

The police disclosed that a 20-year-old Form Two student of the school, accompanied by her father, lodged a complaint at the Obuasi DOVVSU on August 4, 2026.

In a statement issued on Friday, October 16, the police said the student alleged that the headmaster forcibly had sexual intercourse with her at his official residence on the school’s campus.

According to the Police, the girl had gone to an area near the headmaster’s official residence where students dry their clothes to retrieve her dresses when he allegedly lured her into the residence to run an errand for him.

The Police disclosed that upon entering the residence, the suspect allegedly began caressing and fondling her against her will while she was seated on a sofa.

Also, the student alleged that when she resisted his advances, he dragged her into his bedroom and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her, adding that the headmaster subsequently gave her GH¢100 to keep the incident secret.

According to the police, investigations were immediately initiated following the complaint.

The DOVVSU disclosed that the necessary investigative procedures, including a medical examination, reconstruction of the scene, photography and the collection of witness statements, had been completed.

“The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ashanti South Region, Bekwai, has forwarded the case docket on the investigation into the alleged rape case by the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Mr Zakaria Abdulai, alias Paapaa, to the Attorney-General’s office for study and advice,” the statement said.

The development follows Manasseh Azure’s investigation into allegations that 14 female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School were sexually abused by the school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai.
