Chairman Smith Butey, the former Acting National Chairman of the NPP, has revealed that he has nullified the amendment made at the party’s recent National Delegates Conference that sought to make the flagbearer the leader of the party instead of the National Chairman.

According to Chairman Smith Butey, he has also filed a motion at the court challenging the amendment.

Chairman Smith Butey argued that during the delegates’ conference, he did not initiate any amendment to make Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the leader instead of the chairman.

Speaking in an interview on Sompa FM, he stated, “As a leader at the time, I nullified the amendment, and they can take it wherever they want.

“Even they had to make us aware because we don’t know if they had added something to the motion or not… Also, I didn’t bring any amendment during the delegate conference, so I don’t have any idea about it,” he said.

“I don’t want to talk about the court date, but it’s in my car, and you can come home, and I would show it to you,” he added.

It will be recalled that the NPP National Delegates Conference in Kumasi stated that it had approved 14 amendments to its constitution.

The NPP disclosed that the decision to amend certain provisions of the constitution was aimed at strengthening its internal structures, leadership, administration and electoral preparedness.

The NPP subsequently amended Articles 10(3), 10(3)(2) and 10(4)(2) to provide for the presidential candidate to lead the campaign structure.

The new amendment means the presidential candidate, in consultation with the National Executive Committee, shall develop the campaign structure for the presidential election and appoint the chairperson and other members of the National Campaign Advisory Committee, subject to approval by the National Council.

In other news, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the leader and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said the party will soon hold its parliamentary elections.

According to Dr Bawumia, the NPP intends to complete its internal elections as early as possible ahead of the 2028 polls.

He revealed that the process would begin with parliamentary constituency elections, including engagements with sitting Members of Parliament.

Speaking to some party executives on Sunday, October 4, Dr Bawumia stated, “We are going to also be looking to try to have our parliamentary elections as soon as possible, so that the NPP will be done with internal elections, starting with the orphan constituencies”.

The NPP presidential candidate also disclosed that the party has begun scouting for potential parliamentary candidates across constituencies ahead of the 2028 general elections.

According to Dr Bawumia, the NPP plans to identify candidates with the potential to win parliamentary seats, rather than just winning the internal primaries.

He argued that some NPP aspirants may have the financial resources to win an NPP parliamentary primary but may not necessarily be capable of winning in the general election.

Dr Bawumia added, “We are going to do a candidate search across all the constituencies, because some people can win parliamentary primaries because they have money, but they can’t win the general elections”.

“If you leave it to them, they will win the primary, but you’ve lost the seat,” he said.

“Candidate search is going on, and we’re going to have more than one candidate search from independent sources. And we’ll compare what they are saying,” he said.

“Because if we find out that this is the person who can win us the seat, we’ll persuade that person to come on board and help us to win the seat,” he added.

Dr Bawumia further added that the party would seek to make the process as transparent as possible.
