Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, the 2024 running of the NPP, has said that the former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the right candidate to lead the NPP.

According to Napo, Dr Bawumia remains the right leader for the NPP at this critical moment.

In a Facebook post, Napo stated, “Dr Mahamudu Bawumia remains the right leader for our party at this critical moment.”

Napo further highlighted that the party must emerge united after the internal elections on Saturday, January 31.

“I also underscored the importance of a peaceful and credible process as we head into Saturday.

“Through it all, my belief remains firm. The elephant will emerge victorious, and as a united party, we will all rally behind whoever is chosen to sit on it,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh in an interview has said he will never contest for the NPP flagbearer position as long as Dr Mahamudu Bawumia contests.

Napo, as he is commonly referred to, highlighted that no one matches Dr Mahamudu’s wisdom, experience, and ideas to lead Ghana within the NPP.

Speaking on Oyerpa FM, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh explained, “His (Dr Bryan Acheampong) first time of being a Cabinet minister was four years ago, he came to meet us. Also, Dr Adutwum’s first time as a Cabinet minister was four years ago. I, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, have served Cabinent for seven years.

I have worked with all of them at Cabinet, and nobody comes anywhere near Dr Bawumia. To the extent that I decided not to contest for the presidency if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is contesting”.

According to Napo, some person contesting for the NPP flagnearership during their time in Cabinet did not produce a single memo for Cabinet to consider.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh added, “Because we are looking for somebody with wisdom among us to lead, as this is governance, nobody comes near. Some of them sat at the Cabinet and never brought a single memo”.

He further stressed that those blaming Dr Bawumia for the collapse of Ghana’s economy under the Akufo-Addo government are not being truthful.

Napo detailed, “If you look at the relevance to the government, all those contesting who brought policies that have not been done before, today, if the NDC is talking about the one that has fixed Ghana’s economy  they don’t mention any vice president. When 88 NPP MPs called for Ken’s removal, we did not say the vice president must go. So today, if somebody says the vice president collapses the economy, then that person is not being truthful”.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has promised NPP delegates ten appointments to every constituency if elected president of Ghana.

According to Dr Bawumia, the one constituency, ten appointments is aimed at strengthening party structures at the local level and promoting inclusive participation at the national level appointments.

Dr Bawumia highlighted that each constituency would be empowered to nominate qualified and deserving individuals for these appointments, adding that non-performing appointees would not be spared.

He further called for massive support, emphasising his vision to make all constituencies strong and balanced.

In a message to party delegates ahead of the NPP presidential primaries, Dr Bawumia stated, “My plan is to strengthen all constituencies in Ghana to be resilient and sustainable. Most of the time, some constituencies are left out in the appointment process. As a future President of Ghana, God willing, I will dedicate 3,000 out of 7,000 national appointments to constituencies nationwide.

“Every constituency will get at least 10 national-level appointments per constituency, including ministers of state, deputy ministers, CEOs, deputy CEOs, Ambassadors, Deputy Ambassadors, Board of Directors, amongst others,” he promised.

“Appointees who will perform abysmally will be replaced with competent ones,” he stated.
