Jerry Ahmed Shaib, a member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, has made a shocking claim about Ghana’s power outages, commonly known as dumsor.
According to the Weija-Gbawe MP, dumsor is the reason why some traffic lights are not working.
The Weija-Gbawe MP is quoted by a GHOne flyer to have said, “The dumsor situation is why some traffic lights aren’t working”.
However, Nana Aba Anamoah, a renowned media personality, has punched holes in the Weija-Gbawe claims.
Nana Aba Anamoah highlighted that the traffic lights have been problematic for more than a decade.
In a post on X, she wrote, “Oh please!!! The traffic lights have been problematic for more than a decade”.
Some Ghanaians reacting to Jerry Ahmed Shaib’s statement stated, “Why should any serious nation have these BASIC problems for over a decade? Sadly, this and many more will continue to be our living conditions as long as we continue voting for NDC & NPP. Ghanaians are like women who refuse to break up with an ABUSIVE partner and complain always”.
One X user added, “It’s very shameful ooo ..Capital city with traffic light issues. Then what can you even maintain in the country? Traffic light..aahh!!! Those responsible for fixing traffic lights are very useless to be frank. Waste!!!”.
A netizen added, “Don’t worry, they already think we are fools . Does the election result not show any signs of us not being taken for a fool, or do they think it’s because they deceived us ? They must be joking”.
“It’s troubling how certain politicians turn every issue into a political debate, including the dumsor crisis. Rather than tackling the problems at hand, they appear content with things remaining as they are”, one netizen added.
One X user stated, “I have been a delivery for more than 3 months, driving through the city of Accra, the most shocking thing is you will see police men and women directing traffic where there is a well-functioning traffic light, and the areas with no traffic light or broken traffic light, no police”.
Meanwhile, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, the Deputy Spokesperson for the Mahamudu Bawumia, has mocked the John Mahama-led government over the ongoing power outages commonly known as dumsor.
According to Ekua Amoakoh, dumsor is running in shifts across the country rather than the proposed 24-hour economy.
Speaking on The AM Show on April 29, Dr Amoakoh stated, “We haven’t seen anything about the Green Transition”.
“I don’t know if it was just wordplay to appeal to the younger generation who are more interested in renewables,” she added.
“At this point, it looks like dumsor is the only thing running a shift—not the 24-hour economy,” she said, referencing recurring power outages affecting households and businesses.
“From what I found, he was already due to go on retirement next month,” she said, adding that such actions risk creating the impression that “heads are rolling” when the individual was already preparing to exit office.
“Do you really think people would intentionally sabotage power so they go home and sit in darkness? It doesn’t make sense,” she argued.
