Michael Okyere Baafi, a Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, has said he is exiting parliamentary politics to focus on his businesses.
The New Juaben South MP, however, stressed that he will continue to engage in political activities.
Speaking to Kumasi-based Lawson FM, he said, “You need principles in life. I am not exiting politics, I am exiting parliamentary politics. I am done with parliamentary politics. I intend to focus more on my businesses. Now I run my business on a part-time basis, but because we are in opposition, I have more time to do business.
Now I have time to do a lot of work. I am the Chief Marketing Officer for all my businesses. I identify new businesses and grow existing ones. I will have time to engage in my business and will get more returns, which we can use to support politics,” he stated.
It will be recalled that Michael Okyere Baafi earlier revealed he was not going to seek re-election in 2028.
The lawmaker alluded to the worrying state of Ghana’s politics as his main reason not to seek re-election in the 2028 elections.
Speaking in an interview on AsaasePa FM on September 2, 2025, Okyere Baafi stated, “If this is how our politics is turning, then the world is becoming scarier. That’s why some of us, and I, have said that after this term, I won’t seek re-election in 2028”.
He added, “We did all the work and campaigning, and we were confident of winning the election. But the NDC’s strategy was to buy votes. Almost every voter who wanted money was paid about GH¢500-1,000 by the NDC.
They distributed items such as hair dryers, spraying machines and other things. Given the work we put in, there was no way we should have lost. The NDC even had a table with thugs protecting the table, and not even the police could intervene”, he added.
In related news, the New Juaben MP has said that when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was in government, he used to buy bags of rice for NDC MPs.
According to Okyere Baafi, today, with the NDC now in government, when he calls his colleagues, NDC MPs, they don’t even pick up his calls.
The New Juaben South MP stressed that MPs interact cordially with him in the chamber, but their conduct outside the chamber tells a different story.
He cautioned the NDC MPs that being in power does not diminish the relevance of those in opposition, urging them to be mindful of their actions.
Okyere Baafi, however, asserted that what he is experiencing has been an eye-opener, adding that he would be more guarded in his future engagements.
Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV on 14 January 2026, Okyere Baafi explained, “You see, we are all in Parliament, and we face the same issues. Sometimes you think that if you have something today, you should help others so that tomorrow, when you are also in need, they can help you, but after they returned to power, they don’t mind anybody”.
“I told one of their frontbench members that I used to pack rice and send it to his hometown. All three frontbench members of the NDC are my friends, and whenever I sent the rice, I shared it among all of them,” he said.
He added, “But today, now that they are in power, when you call them, they don’t mind you. Sometimes it’s not even about money; they just don’t mind you. Yet when they see you in Parliament, they pretend everything is fine.”
