Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, a former Energy Minister, has broken his silence over an alleged video circulating on social media alleging that he, together with some NPP MPs in the Ashanti Region, met with District Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana, offering them money to deliberately keep the lights off (dumsor) in their respective districts.

According to Napo, the video circulating on social media is “entirely false, malicious, and without any basis in fact”.

Napo, in a video shared on X, categorically stated that he has not met any NPP MPs for a meeting, adding that he has been out of the country for a month now.

He further added that as a Minister of Energy, he never met ECG District directors and does not even know them.

In a post on X, Napo wrote, “Beyond the obvious falsehood, I find this claim deeply troubling because of the dangerous implications it carries for the hardworking engineers and officials of ECG, unfairly exposing them to public anger, intimidation, and possible harm arising from a narrative built on deliberate misinformation.

I have therefore instructed my lawyers to commence the necessary legal processes against the radio and television station involved, as well as the presenter responsible for making these claims, to compel them to substantiate these allegations with credible evidence or face the full consequences of the law.

At a time when Ghanaians are confronted with serious challenges in the power sector, the focus of government and its communicators should be on providing lasting solutions to the crisis and not manufacturing falsehoods, spreading smear narratives, and politicising matters that directly affect the lives of our people.

The Ghanaian people deserve honesty, accountability, and leadership that is committed to solving problems rather than creating distractions”.

Meanwhile, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has filed a GH¢20 million defamation lawsuit against TV XYZ and broadcaster Salifu Maase, commonly referred to as Mugabe Maase.

According to court filings, the suit follows the broadcast of an audio recording on the programme “Inside Politics,” which alleged that Dr Opoku Prempeh paid ECG District Engineers to deliberately disrupt power supply in the region.

The former Minister described the allegations as false, malicious and damaging to his reputation, and is seeking a retraction, public apology, perpetual injunction and other reliefs from the court.

The GH¢20 million defamation suit follows a video that recently surfaced online in which the media house, during one of its morning shows, hosted Salifu Maase alongside Hopeson Adorye, who alleged that some key figures within the NPP were behind the recent power crisis.

During the discussion, the video alleged that certain party executives had allegedly paid engineers in the Ashanti Region to sabotage the government by deliberately causing the power outages in the region.

The video further alleged that each engineer was offered GH¢150,000 as part of the plan.

Court documents dated May 8, 2026, detailed the several damages Napo suffered as a result of the allegations.

Parts of the document stated, “suffered damage to his character and reputation by being portrayed to right-thinking members of society as a person who is a saboteur of the national interest.”

It further added “suffered damage to his character and reputation by being portrayed to right-thinking members of society as a person who is unpatriotic,” among other claims.

Napo is seeking a public apology and retraction from the media house and the journalist and also a sum of GH¢20,000,000 in damages.

“An order directed at the Defendants to publish an unqualified retraction and apology to the Plaintiff with the same prominence as the defamatory words received, within seven days after judgment.

“An order for a perpetual injunction restraining the 1st Defendant, his agents, assigns, servants, and any person claiming authority through him from further making and/or publishing any words defamatory of the Plaintiff,” part of the document stated.

“…The sum of Twenty Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢20,000,000) in damages for defamation jointly and severally against the Defendants,” the document added.
