A former Vice President of the Association of Students of English (ASSENS) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in 2024, Mercy Yaaba Bredu, has died in China.
Reports suggest Mercy Yaaba Bredu died shortly after collapsing at the airport after arriving from Ghana.
Mercy Yaaba Bredu, a first-class student, travelled to China with plans to further her education and explore opportunities in the country.
According to reports, she left Ghana on Monday, August 24, 2026 and was seen off by friends and family members at the Accra International Airport before her departure, with her flight reportedly departing at about 1:30 p.m.
The information gathered suggest during the journey, Mercy reportedly complained of heart pain.
However, shortly after arriving in China, she suddenly collapsed at the airport while receiving a bouquet of flowers.
Reports suggest she was subsequently rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
Nonetheless, despite efforts to save her, she died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, just two days after leaving Ghana.
Mercy Yaaba Bredu’s sudden death has left her family, friends, former colleagues and members of the ASSENS community in shock and grief.
In other news, months ago, A Ghanaian graduate student, identified as Samuel, reportedly died in a car crash south of Centerville, South Dakota.
According to reports, Samuel was pursuing a Master’s degree in English Language and Literature Studies at the University of South Dakota.
Reports suggest the tragic accident occurred on Friday, January 16, when he was travelling southbound in a Subaru sedan on Highway 19.
The news shared by the social media account EBHUB read, “A Ghanaian graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in English Language and Literature Studies at the University of South Dakota, US has reportedly died in a car crash south of Centerville, South Dakota.
The deceased, identified as Samuel, was travelling southbound in a Subaru sedan on Highway 19 on Friday, January 16, when he entered an intersection and was struck by a Ram pickup truck”.
Some Ghanaians reacting to the tragic news stated, “Wow… after all the hard work and dedication, this tragic incident happened. May his soul rest in peace.
I pray for the safety of all our loved ones abroad as they go out and return home”.
“You can be the best driver in the world, and you’ll be on the same road with idiots ah”, a netizen added.
“Really sad. Imagine your mum telling the whole community that my son is abroad.
Only for this thing to happen”, one more Ghanaian added.
