Julius Neequaye Kotey, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has reacted to suggestions that he is eyeing the Korley Klottey parliamentary seat, which is currently occupied by Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings.
According to the DVLA boss, he has every right to contest for that seat, being an indigene of the constituency, but he will not be contesting in the 2028 election.
Speaking in a recent interview on Starr FM, the DVLA boss stated. “If I’m eyeing that seat, it is not against any law. I have the right to go and contest for the seat. This is my third term as a constituency executive. Let me tell you. At age 17, I was a branch secretary for NDC. At age 17, I was not allowed to register. In 2004, I was a polling agent even though I wasn’t allowed to vote.
“In 2006, I became a constituency. I became a branch secretary. In 2010, I became a branch chairman. I became a deputy constituency communications officer, a constituency communications officer, and I’m now a vice chairman for the constituency. If I want to contest for that seat, I’m free; I am good enough to do it,” he said.
Neequaye Kotey, however, indicated that he has not made up his mind on when he would be contesting for the seat, urging Dr Zanetor not to be worried about him challenging her for the seat, at least in 2028.
“But I’ve said, and I’ve said it over and over again, that in 2028, I am not contesting. I don’t know if the Lord will change my mind for the subsequent years, but for 2028 I’m not… even 2028, never say never, I can decide to. I don’t break any law.”
He added, “So Dr Zanetor should relax. The way she’s going around, she should relax. I’m not coming to contest her. She should relax.”
In related news, Julius Neequaye Kotey, has shared how he rejected a GH¢4 million bribe allegedly offered by a cartel.
According to the DVLA boss, the GH¢4 million bribe was allegedly offered to him by a cartel to stop the implementation of the new number plate system.
Julius Neequaye Kotey further revealed that he subsequently reported the incident to the Special Prosecutor for further investigation.
Speaking on StarrFM with host Bola Ray on StarrChat, Julius Neequaye Kotey stated, “Somebody came to my office with a bag containing GH¢4 million to bribe me to stop the implementation of the new number plates, but I had to reject it because the President had so much confidence in me”.
“The issue is that I wasn’t even interested. First, I want to leave a legacy. And I’ll be so proud to see the new number plates that can be scanned for instant real information,” he added.
When asked why, as a responsible citizen, he did not call or inform security personnel, he explained, “Well, that never came to mind. And then I wasn’t having police security. The police security came in when I started receiving threats from people not to change their number plates”.
He further disclosed that the person behind the alleged bribe had passed away.
“I gave the evidence to the Special Prosecutor. Yes, I did everything. But we had indications that the one who sent them passed on. I even know his name now.
“…Yes, he passed on. He’s an old man,” he added.
