Private legal practitioner and social activist Oliver Baker-Vormawor has punched holes in the argument that seeks to justify embattled former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s refusal to return to Ghana.

Oliver Baker-Vormawor disclosed that no one can argue that Ken Ofori-Atta would not have gotten bail if he had stayed in Ghana, adding that the Mahama government has not opposed bail in a single case of corruption under ORA.

According to Barker-Vormawor, no sane person can say Ken Ofori-Atta’s refusal to come back to Ghana is because he is afraid of a fair trial.

He cited his own circumstances when he was charged with treason; he stayed in Ghana even when he was placed in an Ashaiman cell with a security operative holding a knife on him.

The social activist argued that he finds it despicable that some voices which claim to be voices of conscience openly justify Ofori-Atta’s actions.

In a post on X, Oliver Baker-Vormawor wrote, “Can any single person say that Ken Ofori-Atta would not have gotten bail if he had stayed? This Government has not opposed bail in a single case of corruption we have seen under ORAL so far.

So if Ken Ofori-Atta did not want to come back to Ghana, no sane person can claim it’s because he was afraid of a fair trial.

The impunity to believe that he is entitled to be immune from the mechanisms for accountability set up under our democracy should shock us to the marrow.

Yet people jubilate widely at this ridiculousness.

Even when I was charged with Treason, a charge so ridiculous that Godfred Dame was going about telling everyone that it wasn’t his doing. But something Akufo-Addo forced him to do.

I stayed in Ghana.

Even when the Government placed a national security operative in my Ashaiman cell on me with a knife. I stayed in this country.

Even when agents maintained surveillance on me for months, I stayed.

Even when I was approached by a security person, claiming they wanted to join a coup plan, and I knew it was a set-up attempt, I stayed.

Even when the Government opposed any attempt by me to travel out of this country, claiming I would run away, I stayed.

For a Facebook post. I was no Minister of State. Just a person who wanted his country fixed!

I find it despicable that some voices which claim to be voices of conscience openly justify Ofori-Atta’s actions.

If Ghanaian politicians have any sense, they should not appoint me as Special Prosecutor. Because they themselves know paa, that if there is one person who hates their theft clubs and how they take Ghana for granted. No stone would remain unturned to bring them to face justice.”

Some Ghanaians reacting to his post wrote, “I agree. If ordinary citizens, activists and opposition figures are expected to stay and face the law, why should former ministers be treated differently? Accountability cannot be something we demand only from political opponents.

That said, a legitimate question remains: if the evidence is strong and prosecutors are confident in their case, why can’t Ken Ofori-Atta be tried in absentia? Justice should not depend entirely on a person’s willingness to return.

The objective must be accountability and due process, not political theatre. If the law provides a path to proceed, then the focus should be on securing justice rather than turning the matter into a spectacle. I rest my case”.

One X user added, “You don’t get it. Your name doesn’t have an Akuffo. You don’t bear the surname Ofori Atta. You don’t belong to a party. Your crime is different from a party person’s. You’re wrong in demanding your country’s fix. That’s your crime.

The bigger crime then? Your cousin was not the president”.

“As a senior lawyer who practised for years,  I expected you to at least prompt the prosecution to charge him before thinking about arresting and bailing him. Be fair to your profession and how it works. Don’t be political in everything, ” a netizen added.

One last X user added, “You can cry, wail and shout all you want!!! You can tell your friend, Srem Sai and OSP to proceed to court with their so-called evidence or shut up!!!

Your protests and your wailing on social media contributed to Ken winning the immigration case and being granted permanent residency, so continue helping Ken’s case wae. Asuiii”.
