Michael Okyere Baafi, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, has claimed the John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) is punishing the people of the Ashanti region with power outages (dumsor).

According to the New Juaben South MP, the NDC government is punishing the Ashanti Region with power outages for not voting for the NDC.

Speaking in an interview on Angel FM, Michael Okyere Baafi stated, “The government is punishing the Ashanti Region with power outages because the region does not vote for them. They are punishing the Ashanti Region for the people to give up on their livelihoods and just die out of frustration”.

He further added,  “We need to rise against this wickedness towards Ashantis. Their interest is to cause pain, that is why dumsor in the Ashanti Region is that of the UN Secretary General. Those in Accra and Koforidua are those of ministers. They are hurting the people of Ashanti, and this is the time to rise”.

Meanwhile, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced that there has been a major leadership shake-up within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the development follows recent intermittent power outages in the Ashanti Region.

In an announcement made by Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on X on Sunday, April 26, 2026, read, “Minister for Energy and Green Transition has asked the CEO of GRIDCo to step aside pending investigations into fire incident at Akosombo power control centre”.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu further disclosed that there has also been a major shake-up in the leadership of the ECG in the Ashanti Region.

His post added, “Also, there has been a major shake-up in the leadership of the ECG in the Ashanti Region”.

He further disclosed that, “ At 2 pm tomorrow, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon John Jinapor, will hold a major briefing on recent developments in electricity distribution”.

Also, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has told Ghanaians calling for a load shedding timetable that it is too early.

According to the ECG, the recent power disruptions are due to the fire outbreak at the Akosombo GRIDCO substation.

He explained that engineers are working to restore the full electricity supply.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, April 26, Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, ECG’s General Manager for External Relations, explained, “After Akosombo, the fact is that it blocked about 1000 megawatts, but I am sure you also understand that even after losing 1000 megawatts, we have still been consistent with power supply within some parts of the country”.

“The question is, the current situation at the Akosombo GRIDCO substation is a work in progress. As I speak to you, there is a resolution; there are some of the issues that have been resolved, some parts of the country are back on full supply pending other lines that will be restored,” he stated.

Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku  added, “So if we start talking about a load shedding timetable right now, don’t you think it is too early to call for a load shedding timetable?”

“The engineers have assured us that very soon we are getting back on supply. I would once again urge the general public and our customers to remain calm and be assured that the situation is under control,” he said.

“I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience our cherished customers are facing. The incident wasn’t expected. It was a major incident which has rendered the entire control room affected and down, and we sincerely apologise to our customers,” he said.
