The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has disclosed that Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, ignored two invitations issued in February 2026 to assist with an ongoing investigation.
According to EOCO, its invitations were not honoured, prompting the Office to take steps to secure the MP’s attendance in accordance with the law.
EOCO revealed that its officers were acting in the lawful discharge of their responsibilities when they attempted to arrest the MP in connection with the investigation.
In a press statement stated, “The Office had previously invited Hon. Baffour Awuah to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026. The invitations were not honoured”.
EOCO explained that the attempted arrest was one of the lawful steps it had taken to secure his attendance after the earlier invitations were not honoured.
According to EOCO, they have identified two persons who allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s departure from the scene and are assessing their conduct for possible further action.
EOCO maintained that being a member of Parliament does not by itself bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law.
They further disclosed that the investigation remains active and that it will review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including available video evidence, before determining its next steps.
Meanwhile, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Manhyia South MP and lawyer for Salomey Baffoe, has broken his silence defending his decision to flee the Accra High Court following an attempted arrest by officials of EOCO to take him into custody.
According to Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the woman claimed to be an EOCO official but failed to provide any evidence to establish her identity.
He disclosed that he offered to drive himself to the EOCO office, but the woman rejected, insisting that he use their vehicle.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, September 23, Baffour Awuah said, “It became obvious to me that it was one of the recent kidnappings that have been going on, which is sponsored by the state,” he said.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah explained that he subsequently decided to drive to safety, citing his responsibility to his constituents, the Minority Caucus, his family and his client, Salomey Baffoe.
“And that is why I had to run. I had to drive to safety. I’ve come to Parliament, and then my colleagues are behind me, and I thank them very much,” he said.
Also, the Minority in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama to rein in his appointees to order.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, criticised what he described as excesses by the government and urged President Mahama to ensure that state institutions operate within the law.
He stated, “Mr President, reflect on your legacy. You are left with almost just 2 years from exiting office. The question is, what would you tell Ghanaians when you are in your quiet moment? Can you proudly say, with the second opportunity you were given by God, you used that chance to transform your country?
“Watch these excesses; enough is enough. Call your appointees to order because this is not the Ghana we want. We are not against accountability, and we always say that. We are not against any state institution going about its lawful duty as enshrined in any enactment or the Constitution. What we are saying is that a state institution must be seen to be doing its work lawfully.”
