Martin Kpebu, a Private legal practitioner, has condemned the attempt by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
According to Martin Kpebu, the attempted arrest of Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is a retrogression in Ghana’s democratic development.
He argued that the incident raises concerns about the potential misuse of state security agencies to intimidate or suppress outspoken lawmakers.
Lawyer Kpebu stressed that no party stays in power forever, warning the NDC government that it was just yesterday Ghanaians drove out Akufo-Addo and the NPP.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, Martin Kpebu stated, “It’s a retrogression in our quest for a better democracy. It’s a retrogression. My understanding so far is that you would write to the Speaker of Parliament. Then the Speaker would make arrangements to talk to the MP; then they will find a suitable time, etc. Then the MP avails himself”.
“It’s to avoid a situation where a ruling government would try to use the police and other security agencies to clamp down on vociferous opposition MPs. This is our democracy; no party can stay in office forever. So the tables will always turn,” he said.
“So when officialdom is doing these things, they should be careful, very, very careful. It was just yesterday we drove out Akufo-Addo and the NPP because of such matters. NDC comes, and they are repeating the same? They should know how Ghanaians will react,” he added.
Martin Kpebu’s comments follow reports that EOCO officials attempted to arrest the Manhyia South MP at the Accra High Court on Wednesday.
Viral videos surfaced showing a confrontation at the forecourt of the Accra High Court after an Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) officer approached the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, in an apparent attempt to arrest him.
The MP claimed that the attempt to arrest him was because he was representing his client in the Ghana Jollof case.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah told the woman to move from the front of his car, but she refused, which caused him to push her.
In the viral video shared on X, the situation escalated after the MP allegedly pushed the female EOCO officer away and demanded to see an arrest warrant.
“What shows that you are from EOCO?” the MP was heard asking the officer.
The officer reacted after the MP pushed her away, attempting to push the MP back, while some persons at the scene blocked her from stopping the MP from entering his vehicle.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah subsequently drove away from the scene. The EOCO officer was later seen getting into a white pickup vehicle and reportedly following the MP.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has disclosed that Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, ignored two invitations issued in February 2026 to assist with an ongoing investigation.
According to EOCO, its invitations were not honoured, prompting the Office to take steps to secure the MP’s attendance in accordance with the law.
EOCO revealed that its officers were acting in the lawful discharge of their responsibilities when they attempted to arrest the MP in connection with the investigation.
In a press statement stated, “The Office had previously invited Hon. Baffour Awuah to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026. The invitations were not honoured”.
EOCO explained that the attempted arrest was one of the lawful steps it had taken to secure his attendance after the earlier invitations were not honoured.
According to EOCO, they have identified two persons who allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s departure from the scene and are assessing their conduct for possible further action.
EOCO maintained that being a member of Parliament does not by itself bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law.
They further disclosed that the investigation remains active and that it will review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including available video evidence, before determining its next steps.
