The Minority leader, Afenyo-Markin

Awal Mohammed, a communication member on the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has claimed that the ruling NDC is pushing for the replacement of Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader.

According to Awal Mohammed, the calls from members of the NDC for the NPP to replace Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader actually strengthen the position of the incumbent.

He revealed that despite names being mentioned as possible replacements, the NPP has not seen serious internal opposition to Afenyo-Markin’s leadership.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Awal Mohammed stated, “The NDC people are asking we should change him”.

He further argued that some of the names being linked to a possible replacement are people who are regularly seen around Afenyo-Markin, which makes the argument for his removal difficult to understand.

“Almost all those names that are being bandied around, they’re around him,” he said.

Awal Mohammed argued that the NPP’s continued support for Afenyo-Markin is partly influenced by the pressure coming from the governing NDC.

“We are solidly behind him. And we think that the more they tell us to remove him, the more we have cause to keep him there,” Awal stated.

“Again, he’s doing what we have really asked him to do,” he added.

In related news, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has said the entire party leadership stands fully with the Minority leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.

Nana B dismissed any assertions of disagreement within the party over the Minority Caucus’ scrutiny of the GoldBod losses.

According to Nana Boakye, there is no confusion within the party, as its leadership, including Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, fully supports the Minority leader.

Speaking during a press conference held by the party on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, Nana Boakye stated, “Let me say this boldly and plainly that the entire leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including the presidential candidate, are fully behind the Minority. There is no confusion anywhere.

“We are fully behind the Mighty Minority. The NPP stands fully, completely, and unreservedly behind our Mighty Minority caucus in Parliament led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin. We wholeheartedly support each member in this struggle.”

“We back their questions, scrutiny, and demands for a full, transparent account of how a state institution charged with buying and protecting Ghana’s gold ended up presiding over such huge losses of this magnitude. This is not partisan politics but a national duty,” he noted.

“We are not backing off now, not tomorrow, not until every question is answered in full and in public and under proper scrutiny,” he added.

“We also say this to the Minority Leader and every member of the caucus: use every relevant law in the books, every question on the floor of Parliament, every committee hearing, every request for documents, every order paper, every point of order; utilise every relevant tool provided by the Standing Orders in our parliament with confidence,” he urged.
