Nana Akomea, the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Select Committee on Communications, has boldly stated that macroeconomic stability means little to ordinary Ghanaians.
According to Nana Akomea, macroeconomic stability means little if it does not translate into improved living conditions.
He argued that Ghanaians do not eat stability or inflation.
Speaking in a yet-to-be-aired interview on PM Express, Nana Akomea stated, “Nobody, no electorate eats stability. No electorate eats inflation. It is good to achieve stability in the macroeconomy. It is good to achieve low inflation figures. It is not the same as the cost of living”.
“So when you have achieved stability in the dollar, but port charges have gone up by 100%, it is that 100% that translates into your pocket and my pocket. Not the stability of the dollar. The importer will pass that cost on to consumers,” he said.
Nana Akomea added, “When prices go up 50%, it comes to my pocket. Whether it is the right duty or not, it is hitting my pocket directly. That is what I feel, and that is what informs my decision”.
“What influences the ordinary person is the impact. Once electricity goes up, once prices go up, that is what matters. It is the effect on our lives, not the mere fact that the dollar is stable,” he stated.
Nana Akomea comments follow the Mahama government, who have constantly touted their economic gains, including inflation dropping to 3.4 per cent, the cedi strengthening to about GH¢11.30 to the dollar, with Ghana’s GDP rising to an estimated $118 billion.
According to Nana Akomea, these figures do not reflect the daily realities facing most citizens.
However, some netizens have reacted to a news card shared by JoyFM, which quoted Nana Akomea saying, “No electorate eats stability and inflation”.
Netizen reacting to the post wrote, “The funny thing is that their flag bearer was going around giving lectures on how to “save the cedi” like it was a DIY session instead of actually doing it”.
One X user added, “So, truly, truly, there’s no sensible people left in the NPP? How can Nana Akomea make such a reckless statement like this?”.
“It is hard for NPP guys to manage their frustrations; otherwise, they risk crashing their hard-earned political reputations and political ambitions”, a netizen added.
A netizen added, “Maybe electorates eat Reckless borrowing, DDEP , High inflation, High exchange rate and crashed economy as your party NPP did it in 8 years.
STILL BAD GOVERNANCE IN MIND EVEN IN OPPOSITION”.
One X user added, “The thing is the moment you decided to follow Bawumia, you suddenly lose all your senses ooo anaaaa cus how can Nana Akomea of all people say this?”.
“NPP left Ghanaians with nothing, and now Akomea wants to lecture about inflation? Iran’s war is pushing fuel and fertiliser prices up for every farmer. That’s not on Mahama! Let’s get serious!”, a netizen added.
One last X user added, “This is one of their most elite. I used to believe in this guy paaa ooo. NPP has to do something about the reasoning of their party members. If Nana Akumia will say this, then there is a real problem beyond what we all think”.
