Paul Adom-Otchere, the Ghanaian media personality and host of Good Evening Ghana, has boldly stated that President John Dramani Mahama is not getting the right advice as president.

The renowned journalist slammed the Mahama government over the recently held National Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer, which took place despite the devastating floods which claimed the lives of 34 people.

Paul Adom-Otchere argued that the government was insensitive in proceeding with the event as originally planned despite the national mourning.

According to Adom-Otchere, the  National Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer attire could have been changed to black and turned into a commemorative service for the people who died.

Speaking on his programme on July 3, 2026, Adom-Otchere stated, “You know during the campaign in 2024, I used to come here to say something that people didn’t listen to; they thought I was not serious, I used to say because of my love for President Mahama, I was worried that he was not getting the right advice as a former president and a leading presidential candidate. That President Mahama is not getting the right advice.

When I said it, it was thought of as anti-propaganda; Sammy Gyamfi and co will laugh at me. Today, we are seeing it. People have died. Thirty-seven is the number, even if we go by the Interior Minister’s figures. People have died from the rainstorm and then the government of Ghana, a day after these deaths, decided to go ahead with a Thanksgiving service that had already been scheduled.

“Did it not occur to anyone to redirect the programme because it could appear insensitive to the families of those who had lost loved ones? Nobody in the Jubilee House could call a quick meeting and suggest changing the event? They could have changed the attire to black and turned it into a commemorative service for the people who died.

“Even though the Bible says we should give thanks in all things, the appearance of the Thanksgiving service should not have been like a normal celebration. Nobody in the Jubilee House was able to think this and say it and let it be done this way…look at the backlash President Mahama is receiving on social media,” he said.

In related news, the Weija-Gbawe Member of Parliament, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has descended heavily on the John Mahama government over the organisation of a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

Jerry Ahmed Shaib questioned the sincerity of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving while the country faces galamsey devastation and flooding.

According to Weija-Gbawe, the  National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving is pointless when the government has repeatedly failed to match its words with action on the ground, reminding the Mahama government that God help those who help themselves.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Jerry Ahmed Shaib stated, “You’ve had your ministers, ministers of state, who lost their lives just because they were going to deal with an issue of galamsey. We thought that was going to bring this government to its notice, to the extent that they were going to take a serious and critical look at galamsey.

“What is happening to galamsey? It’s become unprecedented. Everywhere you pass, there is galamsey,” he said.

He further fired shots at GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi, saying, “You come and see people like Sammy Gyamfi today. He will hold his father-in-law’s funeral in a lavish and profligate manner, and then we still don’t see the need to stop all of this. Then, when people die, you come and say you are doing thanksgiving.

How long has President Mahama been president? How long has he been vice president? Let’s stop this kind of cheap politics.

He’s the most experienced person, as we speak right now, when it comes to leadership in this country. All we get is promises”, he said.

He further criticised the national prayer exercise, saying, “Then you come and stand here and dance and say you are doing thanksgiving. Do you think God does not help those who help themselves?”
