Akosua Manu, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Adentan, has labelled the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, as a “known liar”.
She accused the GoldBod CEO of using personal attacks to deflect attention from questions about the Board’s reported $1.7 billion loss associated with the domestic gold purchase programme.
Akosua Manu argued that the Ghanaians deserve answers about the circumstances that led to the reported loss and the individuals responsible for decisions concerning the programme.
The former NPP parliamentary candidate cited previous allegations attributed to Sammy Gyamfi, comprising claims concerning the ownership of Hubtel, which proved to be false.
Akosua Manu, however, insisted that the focus of the debate should be on the reported $1.7 billion loss associated with the domestic gold purchase programme rather than the personal exchanges between Sammy Gyamfi and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Speaking on a panel discussion on Metro TV on August 24, 2026, Akosua Manu stated, “Sammy Gyamfi is a known liar; if a liar tells you to go to court, he knows the judge; he is a known liar”.
“It’s established a pattern. Anybody who questions GoldBod or BoG, so long as GoldBod is in the conversation, you are going to face personal attacks and insults. But those personal attacks and insults should not distract us.”
“The voter does not care about the personal relationship or whatever has transpired between Sammy Gyamfi and Afenyo-Markin. The voter is concerned because $1.7 billion is about 1.5 per cent of our GDP,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has revealed that the House will scrutinise the reported US$1.7 billion loss, equivalent to about GH¢22 billion, recorded under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
According to Speaker Bagbin, the scrutiny will help determine whether the reported US$1.7 billion represents an actual financial loss or a policy cost.
Speaker Bagbin revealed that a motion received by his office on August 21, 2026, and would be admitted for consideration.
Speaking in parliament, Alban Bagbin stated, “With the motion they have filed, which was received in my office on the 21st of August, 2026, just three days ago, I have gone through the motion myself and I intend to admit the motion because we have to at least have an end to litigation as to whether it’s a loss or it’s a cost”.
“This House will have the opportunity to go through it. And please, Ghanaians are very intelligent people. They will listen, they will read in between the lines and they will make their decisions,” he added.
