Reports gathered disclosed that six officers of the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI) have reportedly been dismissed, while another has been demoted.
The development follows investigations into allegations of misconduct involving suspects held in the agency’s custody.
Reports by 3News detailed that the affected officers were implicated in an illegal arrangement through which detained suspects allegedly gained access to mobile phones and other unauthorised services in exchange for money.
According to the report, the scandal came to light following a security breach on February 16, 2026, when an officer during routine inspections at one of the detention facilities caught a suspect making a phone call.
The discovery triggered an internal probe after concerns emerged over how prohibited items had found their way into the premises.
During searches of two holding facilities, investigators reportedly found at least six mobile phones, phone accessories and a screwdriver, which was deemed a potential security threat.
The investigation subsequently uncovered suspected links between some officers of the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI) and individuals held in custody.
According to the report, a telephone number was found written on the reverse side of a playing card used by detainees. Investigators traced the number to a BNI officer, prompting further scrutiny of possible unauthorised dealings between personnel and suspects.
Further inquiries allegedly revealed that some officers had been facilitating the provision of mobile phones and other prohibited services to detainees in exchange for money.
Investigators also found that food was being delivered to certain suspects through arrangements involving their relatives and some BNI officers, bypassing the agency’s established procedures.
The food deliveries reportedly provided a channel through which mobile phones and accessories were smuggled into the facilities, enabling detainees to maintain contact with people outside.
The findings led to disciplinary action against eight BNI officers. At the end of the process, six were dismissed, one was demoted, while the remaining officer was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Meanwhile, sources cited by 3News say the agency has moved to strengthen security and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.
The new measures reportedly include polygraph tests for personnel, closer supervision and stricter disciplinary controls to improve accountability and ensure officers comply with internal regulations.
