Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, has said there is an excessive appetite for vengeance in Ghanaian politics.
Lawyer Kpebu made this known while commenting on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) attempted arrest of the Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
He criticised EOCO’s attempted arrest of the MP, calling on law enforcement agencies to adopt a parliamentary approach when they need to question Members of Parliament.
Martin Kpebu noted that under former Speaker Mike Aaron Oquaye, law enforcement officials could meet MPs at Parliament House rather than requiring them to report to a police station.
He argued Mike Aaron Oquaye’s approach should be maintained because there is a high level of vengeance in Ghana’s political system.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on September 26, 2026, Martin Kpebu stated, “You see, when [Oquaye] was Speaker, he had this good practice where instead of allowing the MP to go down to the police station, he would let them come to Parliament House”.
“And I think we must go with that one. Because in this country, we have too much vengeance. People’s appetite for vengeance is just too high in our politics,” he said.
“Meanwhile, on Sundays, the churches are full. On Fridays, they must be full. So many, I mean, come on, what vengeance?” he asked.
He added, “We are Christians. Forgive. You go and preach, forgive, forgive, forgive. You come into government, and you want to do vengeance. What kind of [thing is that]?”
“Please, let’s go with the method. If you need an MP, send the application to the Speaker. Section 20 of Act 300. And let’s use the [former Speaker’s] practice. Let the MP be there,” he said.
“The Speaker has many conference rooms, etc. Let the law enforcement agency go there. Because when the MP goes into the police station, etc., there’s room for a lot of harassment.”
“You can go in at 9 am. They let you [wait]. ‘We are coming. The investigator is here. He’s not there. The director is coming.’ You can go at 9 am and leave at 12 midnight,” he stated.
“We don’t like those abuses. It doesn’t help us. We are building a strong society,” Kpebu added.
Meanwhile, EOCO has disclosed that Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, ignored two invitations issued in February 2026 to assist with an ongoing investigation.
According to EOCO, its invitations were not honoured, prompting the Office to take steps to secure the MP’s attendance in accordance with the law.
EOCO revealed that its officers were acting in the lawful discharge of their responsibilities when they attempted to arrest the MP in connection with the investigation.
In a press statement stated, “The Office had previously invited Hon. Baffour Awuah to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026. The invitations were not honoured”.
EOCO explained that the attempted arrest was one of the lawful steps it had taken to secure his attendance after the earlier invitations were not honoured.
According to EOCO, they have identified two persons who allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s departure from the scene and are assessing their conduct for possible further action.
EOCO maintained that being a member of Parliament does not by itself bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law.
They further disclosed that the investigation remains active and that it will review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including available video evidence, before determining its next steps.
