A deadly explosion involving a motor tricycle carrying suspected explosives has claimed the lives of a Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer and civilians, leaving another critically injured at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
According to reports, the incident happened on Tuesday, November 3, along an unauthorised route near Ghana’s border with Burkina Faso.
The preliminary information gathered from security sources suggests that the motor tricycle was transporting suspected dynamite when it was intercepted by security personnel.
Reports suggest the civilians on board the tricycle reportedly ignored instructions to stop at a security checkpoint and attempted to evade the security officers, leading to a pursuit along the unapproved route.
The chase, however, ended tragically when the tricycle exploded, killing the civilians transporting the suspected explosive materials and catching up with the pursuing Immigration officers.
According to reports, one of the officers died from the impact of the explosion, while his colleague sustained critical injuries and is currently reported to be in serious condition.
Meanwhile, details surrounding the circumstances of the blast, the identities of the deceased civilians and the injured officer’s condition remain unclear.
It is also not yet known where the injured officer is receiving medical attention.
The incident has heightened security concerns in Hamile, a strategic border community in the Upper West Region where security agencies monitor cross-border activities and work to prevent illegal movements.
Further details are expected as investigations into the explosion continue.
