Manasseh Azure Awuni, a Ghanaian Investigative journalist, has torn into the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and organisers of the recently held “Democracy Under Attack” protest in Accra.

In a post on social media on X on August 6, 2026, the Investigative journalist questioned the NPP and organisers, asking them what democracy they believed was under attack.

He further quizzed the NPP why Ghana’s judicial autonomy score declined during their tenure in government.

Which democracy is under attack?

The democracy in which Ghana’s judicial autonomy fell from its 100% score between 2014 and 2017 to 50% in 2023 in the Mo Ibrahim Good Governance Index?

The democracy in which your best performance in Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index was your predecessor’s worst?

The democracy in which young men and women were arrested, refused bail and remanded in custody for weeks because they protested against illegal mining?

The democracy in which a leading member of your party openly incited an attack against a journalist, and when the journalist was shot and killed, nothing happened to him, and your president said at the Bar Conference in Takoradi that the journalist’s killing could not be said to be an attack on press freedom?

The democracy in which Ghana’s press freedom index ranking deteriorated from 26th position in 2016 to 60th in 2022?

The democracy in which some journalists had to flee the country for their lives, in which the crushing of dissenting voices became so palpable that the likes of Sir Sam Jonah openly decried the return of the culture of silence and suffered a barrage of attacks?

Don’t get me wrong. I have openly spoken up against some of the issues you complain about, but those were the same issues you attacked others for complaining about yesterday.

By all means, democracy must be saved, but when some voices join the chorus, the solemn hymn assumes the posture of a comic anthem.

Why?

If what you left behind shows up in an identification parade of governance, the most generous of observers will not see democracy.

Our democracy must be saved. But it must be saved only when you don’t wield the power to abuse it with impunity.”

Manasseh Azure’s comments came shortly after the NPP presented its petition to the Presidency.

Meanwhile, members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have taken to the streets of Accra and staged their “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on Thursday, August 6.

According to the NPP,  their demonstration is aimed at defending civil liberties, the rule of law and democratic accountability following the attack on democracy under the current government.

The protest began its march from the Supreme Court, where they are expected to outline their concerns over recent judicial decisions and to present a petition.

The demonstrators embarked on a peaceful march through some principal streets of the capital before proceeding to the Jubilee House.

In addition, Prof Ransford Gyampo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, has launched a scathing attack on the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Prof Gyampo argued that Ghana’s Democracy is thriving and not under siege as claimed by the NPP.

According to Prof Gyampo,  the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) planned “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration is a face-saving tactic by the party’s leadership.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, August 5, Prof Gyampo stated, “Ghana’s Democracy is thriving and not under siege. Any attempt at busing people to walk, under the guise of a demonstration to trumpet it as being under attack, is a useless face-saving tactic by leaders who currently face a legitimacy deficit in their party”.
