BECE timetable to be reviewed – Haruna Iddrisu announces

0

Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has announced that the government is reviewing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) timetable.

The Minister of Education revealed that the move forms part of the government’s efforts to reduce pressure on BECE candidates.

According to Haruna Iddrisu, the current BECE timetable places unnecessary stress on candidates.

He disclosed that the government intends to give BECE candidates more time to prepare for their final exams.

Speaking during a visit to Aburi Girls’ Senior High School on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Haruna Idrrisu stated, “Accordingly, the government is reviewing the BECE examination calendar. So, now the BECE will begin on a Wednesday and end the following Wednesday. This is to ensure adequate time is given to learners across the country to prepare”.

“So, while we start with the first paper on Wednesday, we will end the following Wednesday. This gives students the weekend to prepare for the expanded workload,” he added.

In related news, Kofi Asare, the Executive Secretary of EduWatch, has called for a reform in the structure of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The EduWatch labelled the current BECE format as a torture on learners just for school placement.

According to Kofi Asare, the current BECE format places undue pressure on students due to the number of subjects the candidates are required to write within a limited period.

He further argued that the current arrangement is outdated and does not reflect modern assessment systems used in other countries.

Kofi Asare proposed reducing the ten subjects to four subjects: Math, English, Science and General Paper.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, May 7, Kofi Asare wrote, “Piling 10 subjects over a 5-day high-stakes BECE just for school placement is torture on learners.

Reduce to 4 subjects: Math, English, Science & General Paper. Others even use an aptitude test plus continuous assessment. This is 2026, not 1996”.

Meanwhile, John K. Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has defended the current structure of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), following criticism by the Africa Education Watch.

According to WAEC, the proposal to reduce the number of examinable subjects for BECE candidates will limit learning.

He argued that limiting the number of subjects at the basic level would affect how BECE candidates prepare academically.

John K. Kapi highlighted that the current BECE structure exposes candidates to a wider range of subjects, which helps ensure a more balanced education.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, May 7, Mr Kapi argued, “If you look at the level at which we are assessing these children—their maturity level and all of that—if we are limiting them to just a few subjects, I believe that what we’re going to do is simply to be limiting the children to just a few things that they pay more attention to”.

“I’ve heard you asking whether it should not be the case where the children will not pay too much attention to a general paper because they think that it’s really not going to be assessed, you know, it’s not going to be anything big to be assessed,” he added.

“God, please, don’t let Sedina Tamakloe fall sick” – Manasseh Azure prays

0

Manasseh Azure Awuni, an award-winning investigative journalist, has prayed to God following the extradition of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, to Ghana.

The investigative journalist, in his prayers, asked God not to let Sedina Tamakloe Attionu fall sick and be admitted to the hospital.

He argued that Ghana needs the former MASLOC CEO to be healthy.

In a post on X, Manasseh Azure Awuni wrote, “God, please, don’t let Sedina fall sick and be admitted to the hospital. We need her healthy”.

The investigative journalist also prayed to God to give the Judge whom will rule on the former MASLOC case wisdom not to grant her bail as she has a history of fleeing the country.

Manasseh, in another post, added, “God, please, give that judge wisdom to rule that someone with a history of running away should not be granted bail if they apply”.

His comments follow, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, who arrived in Ghana on June 9, 2026, to serve his 10-year prison sentence.

The information gathered suggests that the flight tracking data from FlightAware confirmed that Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu arrived at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, aboard United Airlines flight UA 996.

Her flight landed at about 9:01 a.m. after departing Washington Dulles International Airport in the United States at 11:44 GMT.

Reports suggest Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu was taken into custody by security officials and immediately taken into custody.

Also, reports suggest Sedina Tamakloe is said to be undergoing routine questioning and medical checks, which form part of standard procedures before she is transferred to begin serving her sentence.

It will be recalled that Sedina Tamakloe Attionu was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a High Court in Accra.

The former MASLOC CEO was sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labour for causing financial loss of GH¢90 million to the state in April 2024.

In 2019, the case began; however, during the course of the trial, Sedina Tamakloe travelled to the United States to seek medical attention.

Sedina Tamakloe was tried in absentia after failing to return to Ghana.

A former Chief Operating Officer of MASLOC, Daniel Axim, was also sentenced to five years in prison with hard labour.

Sedina Tamakloe and Daniel Axim were found guilty on 78 counts of causing financial loss to the state, stealing, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and causing loss to public property in violation of public procurement law.

According to the Attorney General, the government of Ghana wants Sedina Tamakloe to serve her 10-year jail term in Ghana.

The development follows a U.S. Magistrate Judge, Daniel J. Albregts of the District of Nevada, ordering that the former MASLOC CEO, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, serve her 10-year prison sentence in Ghana.

According to reports, the US court ruled that sufficient evidence exists to support the extradition.

Meanwhile, Titus Glover, the former Greater Accra Regional Minister, has said the former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, will be given a presidential pardon.

The former Greater Accra Regional Minister asserted that he has doubts Sedina Tamakloe will serve her full 10-year prison sentence as she is affiliated with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Titus Glover, Sedina Tamakloe could benefit from a presidential pardon or other interventions that may reduce her 10-year prison sentence.

He further warned that allowing convicted public officials to avoid serving the full sentence could undermine public confidence in Ghana’s fight against corruption and accountability.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Titus Glover stated, “The case is that I am sure they will give her a presidential pardon. She has to serve for some time, but knowing the NDC and their style and the way they do their stuff, I will not be surprised if in the next six months or so they call it off”.

“I do not think she will serve the full term,” he added.

“If Sedina comes out in less than two years, the backlash against the NDC will not be worth it. They have to advise her to stay there. It is for the betterment of society. She has the right to appeal and come out, but generally, anything less than three years will look very bad on us as a society,” he stated.

“Struggling lawyer” – Martin Kpebu and Titus Glover clash on-air in a heated exchange

0

A private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, and former Greater Accra Regional Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover have clashed in a heated on-air exchange.

The confrontation occurred during a live interview on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, when Martin Kpebu revisited a past comment  Titus Glover allegedly made against him.

According to Martin Kpebu, Titus Glover referred to him as a “struggling lawyer.”

During a live interview on Eyewitness News, Martin Kpebu stated, “We were once on TV, and Titus called me a struggling lawyer. He had the effrontery to call me that. Now you have seen your real size. Next time, when you have power, you should not insult citizens like that”.

“I don’t think he should come back to lead us. I think we have other Ghanaians who will behave better. So the NDC will win the election, and by the time the NPP comes back, Titus will be too old. Then he would have learnt his lesson,” he stated.

Kpebu further added, “I pray he loses. Titus should not go anywhere near public office. It is as if the NPP has no talent.”

Titus Glover in the studio was visibly irate and responded sharply, saying, “You were insulting Akufo-Addo. When I hit your adrenaline, you were not happy, and you think Akufo-Addo is happy with what you are doing?”.

He continued: “I can’t let this man run me down anyhow. He is totally wrong with what he is doing. It is as if, any chance he gets, he wants to run people down. If I deal with him right now, people will say that is not how we do it. You have not changed from this conduct. You decide to attack anybody anyhow?”

In other news, Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, has opened up about his fear of being arrested should the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) come back to power.

According to Martin Kpebu, the excessive bail conditions and arrests by the Mahama administration against the NPP are becoming too many.

He disclosed that persons like him, who spoke against the former Akufo-Addo government, should the arrest continue, are in danger of being arrested should the NPP come back to power.

Speaking in a radio interview on Peace FM, Martin Kpebu stated, “The truth must be said; it is becoming too much for me. I have been fighting over bail conditions. So if issues like this come up, I have to speak truthfully.

Those who spoke against Akufo-Addo, if care is not taken, a future NPP government will arrest us. We keep hearing NPP members saying that when they come back to office, one wants bail unless the person comes along with Jesus. Some are also saying that you need to bring Lucifer and other stuff. So we should not joke with things like this, which are making the NPP make all the noise.

In the future, if care is not taken, when they come back to power, it will be a big problem for some of us helping this government. So, things that are not good, we must be frank with the government about it because we cannot endanger our credibility”.

In the case of Abronye, it was becoming too much; Baba Amando’s case also went overboard. I vote for JM, and I still support him, but that does not mean everything I should support everything the government is doing. The security agency should come down; when they do it too much, we are all in danger when the NPP comes back to power”, Martin Kpebu added.

Toase District Court throws out Nyinahin Catholic SHS assault case

0

The Toase District Court has thrown out the case involving a teacher and a student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School captured in a widely circulated video.

Following the arrest of the teacher, Eric Afful was taken to the Toase District Court.

In court, both parties came before the court, with the judge urging the teacher, the student, and their families to resolve the matter amicably through reconciliation and an out-of-court settlement.

The Ashanti Regional GNAT Chairman, Professor Elvis Binney, speaking after the court proceedings, called on civil society organisations and members of the teacher’s community to refrain from making prejudicial comments or issuing threats against the teacher.

In related news, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Ashanti Region has threatened to boycott the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) over the arrest of a teacher at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School.

According to the GNAT, their colleague, Teacher, committed no wrong, arguing that the video, which has gone viral, has portrayed him as a bad person and a culprit.

Speaking in a video shared by Asaase Radio on Facebook,  a representative of the GNAT stated, “Our colleague teacher committed no wrongdoing. The video that has since gone viral has portrayed him as a bad person and a culprit, but that isn’t what it seems. There is an order from above directing that the teacher who has been arrested shouldn’t be given bail. The people who gave the order should come to the Nyinahin community and make their own investigations from the school authorities”.

“We, as a teacher union, will not sit aloof. We are really concerned, together with our district Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) chairman. From tomorrow, no teacher in this district will go to school. We are all going to be in red attire. If due to our boycott, the English paper in the ongoing WASSCE is cancelled, they shouldn’t hold us responsible,” he stated.

GNAT further argued that their personal investigation contradicted the public view created in the viral video.

The GNAT representative added, “If they have done this to our colleague teacher, then it can happen to any of us. If you touch one, you touch all. We are demanding the release of our colleague teacher, or else, for the upcoming WASSCE papers at the Nyinahin College, we will not allow the students to sit for them. And if they don’t sit for the paper, nobody should be blamed”.

“Our colleague is innocent. Initially, when we saw the video, we went with the narrative everyone believed, but when we came to the school to conduct our own investigations, we realised the teacher did no wrongdoing and even the female student who fought with him in the video is begging for forgiveness and asking for the teacher’s release”.

The development follows, a teacher at Nyinahini Catholic Senior High School has been arrested after a viral video captured him assaulting a female student on campus.

In the trending video, the teacher at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in Atwima Mponua District was involved in a physical altercation with a female student in the school’s dormitory.

The teacher in the viral video repeatedly punched the female student and, at one point, lifted her and threw her to the ground, leaving her helpless.

In the viral footage, some people were heard urging the teacher to consider that the student was a girl and to refrain from assaulting her.

However, the teacher, who appeared obviously enraged, answered back by asking, “Is she aware she is a lady?”

Reports suggest the circumstances that led to the confrontation have not yet been disclosed by school authorities.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Daniel Fenyi, in a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the teacher has been arrested.

Daniel Fenyi, in a Facebook post, wrote, “The Nyinahini Catholic SHS teacher seen in the viral video fighting a female student arrested! Regional education directorate is investigating the matter. Full report to be submitted to HQ”.

Meanwhile, the GES regional education directorate has launched an investigation into the incident.

“Daily Graphic is a newspaper, not a gov’t bulletin” – Nana Aba Anamoah tackles Dafeamekpor

0

Nana Aba Anamoah, a renowned broadcaster, has tackled the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, following his criticism of the state-owned Daily Graphic.

Dafeamekpor, in a post on X, argued that a state-sponsored media outlet should highlight government achievements and positive developments rather than deliberately highlighting on its front page about strike action by KATH doctors.

The Majority Chief Whip suggested that the Daily Graphic could have prioritised coverage of President Mahama’s visit to Britain and Belarus.

In a post on X, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor wrote, “This is the front page of the Daily Graphic. A govt- sponsored newspaper that has, for some strange reasons, decided to gloss over major positive government activities but instead focuses on negative happenings.

As we speak, the Prez is in Europe seeking investments from the British and Belarusians for the Nation. A major news item

As we speak, the Vice President has toured some flood-prone areas in Accra and visited Alajo in the company of the Interior Minister, GAR Minister, Accra Mayor, etc. A major news item

As we speak, the government has successfully evacuated nearly 1000 Ghanaians stranded in South Africa due to xenophobic attacks. A major news item

Yet, the Editor of the Daily Graphic has once again deliberately decided to highlight on its front page a strike action by KATH doctors because the CEO has been suspended by the KATH Board for some alleged administrative misjudgments pending investigations. Nobody is above the law. We are all subject to the discipline of the law.

So for the Daily Graphic to highlight what’s really a disciplinary issue and render major govt policy moves as footnotes on its front page is journalistically most undesirable.

I leave it here…….”.

Reacting to his post, Nana Aba Anamoah disagree with the MP’s position, arguing that the Daily Graphic Daily Graphic is a newspaper, not a government bulletin.

According to Nana Aba, the Daily Graphic’s job isn’t to amplify government achievements but to exercise editorial judgement and report what it considers newsworthy.

Nana Aba highlighted that the president’s and vice president’s activities are newsworthy, but editorial decisions should be based on public interest and news value.

In her post, Nana Aba Anamoah argued, “The Daily Graphic is a newspaper, not a government bulletin. Its job isn’t to amplify government achievements but to exercise editorial judgement and report what it considers newsworthy.

Doctors on strike affect healthcare delivery and potentially lives…that is undeniably front-page news. The fact that the President is seeking investment abroad or that the Vice President is touring flood-affected areas doesn’t automatically make those stories more important.

Ironically, criticising a newspaper for not acting as a government public relations outlet is a stronger indictment than the front page itself.

A free press is most valuable when it can decide what deserves prominence independently”.

Majority Chief Whip BLAST Daily Graphic over KATH front-page report

0

The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has fired shots at the state-owned Daily Graphic over its front-page publication of strike action by doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

In a post on X, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor argued that a state-sponsored media outlet should highlight government achievements and positive developments rather than deliberately highlighting on its front page about strike action by KATH doctors.

Nobody is above the law. We are all subject to the discipline of the law.

So for the Daily Graphic to highlight what’s really a disciplinary issue and render major govt policy moves as footnotes on its front page is journalistically most undesirable.

I leave it here…….”.

A Ghanaian journalist, Gary Al-Smith, reacting to the MP’s post, stated, “What the Graphic have on their front page is, arguably, of more interest to the AVERAGE Ghanaian than all the other suggestions in your write-up.

The paper’s fidelity is, first and foremost, to the average Ghanaian, before it is to the government who sponsor(s) it”.

Also, some Ghanaians reacting to the Majority Chief Whip’s comments stated, “Focusing on systemic rot in a deplorable country is what a state-owned media outlet should do, not parroting vague supposedly positive happenings. Whining about it is irrelevant.

President seeking (basically begging with a bowl) for investments is not a major news item”.

One X user added, “Respectfully, issues bordering public health first before government popularity. Hon.@etsedafeamekpor, you are above pettiness. You can’t fault @Graphicgh on this”.

A netizen added, “Very appalling for such a newspaper to close its eyes to positive, progressive issues and rather focus on reactionary issues. Very disgraceful”.

“Sorry, sir, it’s the citizen-sponsored newspaper, and the citizens have the right to know what’s going on in the health sector, as they can’t afford the premium hospitals in and outside Ghana when they’re sick. Enough of the prioritisation of party image over the country’s interest”, a netizen added.

A netizen added, “The negative is part of the happenings in government. How much did the president bring from his trip to solve the KATH inadequate infrastructure issue?

Making the government look clean is not the job of the Daily Graphic”.

One last X user noted, “The implication seems to be that a strike action at KATH, with all its potential consequences for patients, should be overshadowed by concerns about government optics. Shouldn’t the focus be on reporting the facts rather than shaping a narrative that favours one government?”

“I have become so allergic to rain” – Dome-Kwabenya MP

0

Elikplim Akurugu, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya, has been touring several flood-prone communities in her constituency, revealing that she has become allergic to rain.

According to the Dome-Kwabenya MP, anytime it starts to rain, she begins to think of the people in flood-prone areas.

Elikplim Akurugue expressed sadness over the destruction caused by the floods,

She noted that although no lives were lost, many residents had suffered significant property damage.

The MP, however, attributed the flooding to human activities such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and the construction of buildings on waterways and drainage channels.

Speaking to the media during her tour of flooded areas in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency on Monday, 8th June, 2026, Elikplim Akurugu stated, “Now I have become so allergic to rain; anytime I hear rain, I just think of the people.

I have gone round, and I have seen what shouldn’t be as a community or a constituency. Thank God lives are not lost, but properties are lost, and you go to people’s homes, you just feel so sad”.

Reports suggest the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya toured the flood-prone communities in the constituency together with the Municipal Chief Executive for the Ga East Municipal Assembly, Edmund Agboh, and officials of the assembly to identify the causes of recent flooding and inspect structures obstructing waterways.

Elikplim Akurugu during her tour visited Christian Village, Sesemi, Abokobi Station, Falaku and the Pure Water area during her tour.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has warned Ghanaians of more rains across both coastal and inland areas in the coming days.

According to the GmeT, residents must be alert and stay away from flood-prone communities.

Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, the Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting at GmeT, explains that further rains are expected.

He cautioned that places already saturated trigger flooding in vulnerable communities.

Speaking to Citi News, the Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting at GmeT stated, “Over the coast and inland areas… but for us on the eastern coast, since it is a system that is passing, later in the day it will come down. Places are already flooded. Any little rain that comes again will flood the places. So we should be cautious and avoid places that are already saturated and already flooded”.

“We should also make sure that they stay tuned to the weather information. As I said, we are still in June. And until we get out of June, we should expect more of these rains to come,” he added.

Also, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has shockingly claimed that she has tackled flooding in the Greater Accra Region.

Linda Ocloo, speaking in an interview with Asaase Radio, claimed that she had already tackled the Accra flooding long before the flooding began.

According to Linda Ocloo, she did a lot of demolition at the Ramsar site, which led to a lot of people hating him.

Speaking on Asaase Radio, Linda Ocloo stated, “I have tackled flooding within the Greater Accra Region. I tackled this way back before we started experiencing this flooding in Greater Accra.

I have also tackled issues about flooding, knowing very well that some of the buildings at Ramsar sites will be affected when it rains. I went on, and  I did a lot of demolition, and you could see I have a lot of people who hate me because of this demolition exercise”.

I was detained in Dubai — Springfield boss Kevin Okyere tells Ghanaian Court

0

The CEO of Springfield Exploration and Production Limited (SEP), Kevin Okyere, has testified in a Ghanaian court that he was detained in Dubai.

Reports suggest Kevin Okyere admitted that the Springfield entity drew down $50 million from a $100 million Petraco financing facility.

According to reports, Kevin Okyere’s admissions represent a pivotal moment in the long-running legal dispute, shifting focus to substantive issues of the transactions rather than just jurisdiction or procedure.

The news update shared by CDR Africa read, “Springfield Energy founder Kevin Okyere has told a Ghanaian court that he was once detained in Dubai and that a Springfield company received $50 million through a financing arrangement linked to Petraco.

The testimony is a major development in the ongoing legal dispute over the company’s finances, as the court examines the details of the transactions and related claims”.

It will be recalled that Kevin Okyere was earlier released on a US$20 million bail in Dubai, but was, however, restricted from leaving the emirate.

This follows a US$94 million fraud case filed by Switzerland-based Petraco Oil Company SA against Okyere.

Mr Okyere’s bail in Dubai is the latest development in a protracted international legal dispute involving high-value petroleum transactions, cross-border arbitration, and allegations of large-scale fraud.

His arrest came despite previous petitions by Petraco Oil Company to Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) and the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

According to the information gathered, the Swiss company, frustrated by the lack of response in Ghana, pursued legal action in the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.

It has been claimed that the Office of the Attorney General stalled the case because it was seen as a civil issue that does not require state intervention.

Another claim highlighted that the Mahama government was working to help Springfield, “whose desperate unitization prospect with the Italian oil giant, ENI, didn’t see the light of day, either to sell the block, Afina, to the state or to have it appraised for takeover by another company.

The unitization between Springfield’s Afina discovery and ENI’s Sankofa field in Ghana was a years-long dispute that resulted in a government directive from the Akufo-Addo administration to combine the fields for more efficient development”.

Mr Okyere’s arrest was in connection with what is described as a “systematic and orchestrated economic crime” involving nearly US$93 million allegedly perpetrated by Springfield Exploration & Production Limited and GMP Energy Limited, both Ghanaian oil companies, along with their senior executives.

Meanwhile, deep-throat sources have alleged that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, played a behind-the-scenes role in Kevin Okyere’s release from Dubai prison.

It has been alleged that the Asantehene mounted sustained pressure on the John Mahama-led government to intervene diplomatically on Kofi Okyere’s behalf.

According to reports, approximately US$5 million was mobilised to make partial payments to Petraco Oil Company SA in Kevin Okyere’s US$94 million fraud case.

Reports claimed that the Mahama administration, following the Otumfuo’s pressure, brokered a diplomatic arrangement that enabled Mr Okyere to enter Ghana, despite his unresolved legal issues in the UAE.

Gov’t secretly sponsoring NDC supporters to the World Cup – Minority blows alarm

0

The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu, speaking on behalf of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, has accused the government of secretly sponsoring NDC supporters to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to Habib Iddrisu, the actions taken by government officials and members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) contradict President Mahama’s publicly stated position.

He alleged that Members of Parliament on the ticket of the NDC have been given two slots each, adding that District Chief Executives (DCEs) across the country have also been given three slots per constituency.

Habib Iddrisu further argued that the arrangement undermines the government’s stated position as opportunities to travel for the tournament are being distributed along partisan lines.

Speaking at a press conference addressed by the Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu, on Tuesday, June 9, stated, “Why is it the case that the president is saying something, but the Ministry of Youth and Sports is doing something else? Why is it the case that they said they are not sponsoring supporters to go to the World Cup, but they are giving NDC MPs two slots each, and they are giving their constituencies three slots through the DCEs?

“It is denting the image of Ghana. If you go to the American embassy today, over a thousand people have applied, but they have issued fewer than a hundred visas to some of them because the right thing has not been done, they are not properly screened, and when they do things like that, it dents the image of Ghana.”

His comment follows President John Dramani Mahama, who had earlier asserted that the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted by three countries, presents significant logistical and financial challenges.

He disclosed that the cost approximates for each person to be fed, accommodated, transported, and all that to watch the games, tickets, and all that is estimated at almost $11,000.

According to John Mahama, the government cannot be in a position to fully sponsor large numbers of supporters travelling from Ghana due to the estimated cost per supporter being about $11,000.

He revealed that the government plans to buy match tickets for Ghanaians abroad to support Black Stars.

Speaking at a diaspora town hall meeting on Sunday, May 31, President Mahama stated, “We are restricted because of the nature of this particular World Cup – it is being held in three countries. We are playing our first match in Canada, then we will be moving to Boston, and from there to Philadelphia. The cost of transporting, feeding, and accommodating each supporter is beyond our means.

“We say we are being fiscally disciplined. We cannot spend our money in that manner. The cost for each person to be fed, accommodated, transported, and all that, including tickets to watch the games, is estimated at almost $11,000,” he stated.

President added that, as a result, his government will focus its support on organised supporters’ groups and Ghanaian communities already based in host cities.

He further disclosed, “What we are doing is that we are procuring tickets for Ghanaians in the diaspora who want to attend the games. So if you want to attend the game, you will get a ticket to attend the game.

“We have organised our chapters, our Ghanaian citizens in Boston, Philadelphia and Canada. The tickets that we have purchased, we will give to them to enable them to watch the matches,” he stated.

Sports Minister must explain to Ghanaians how 1000 early World Cup match tickets cost us $1.1m – Journalist fumes

0

Ghanaians Journalist based in the United Kingdom, Austine Woode, is chasing the Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, for details over Ghana’s early World Cup match tickets.

According to the Journalist, Adams has to explain to Ghanaians how 1000 early World Cup match tickets cost us $ 1.1 million.

He asserted that the Sports Minister’s revelation that 1000 early World Cup match tickets at $1.1 million have gone under the radar.

In a post on X, Austine Woode stated, “The Minister of Sports, Kofi Adams, has to explain to Ghanaians how 1000 early World Cup match tickets cost us $1.1m

I’m worried that this issue has gone under the radar”.

Some Ghanaians reacting to his post stated, “Hon. Kofi Adams must understand that public office comes with public accountability. Since assuming office as Sports Minister, the Black Stars have participated in several international friendly matches, yet Ghanaians have not been given a comprehensive breakdown of the revenues and expenditures associated with these games”.

One X user added, “I hope this is not true.

If true, then we should select 1000 people here in GH and give them $1100 each to spend in our economy. The multiplier effect will be better than the World Cup ticket spend!”.

Another netizen added, “So he foolishly bought 1000 VIP TICKETS FOR MERE SUPPORTERS? Even here in Ghana, during match days, ticket giveaways are 90% of those of popular stands. Well, it’s Ghana money! Somebody in previous ndc govt bought one coconut @ $250. Another bought Chinchilla Gh25m. Sane ppl again”.

It will be recalled that Sports Minister Kofi Adams has disclosed that approximately $1.1 million from the Blacks Stars fundraising campaign has been spent on match tickets.

According to Kofi Adams, the $1.1 million was used to acquire match tickets for Ghanaian fans to attend and support the Black Stars at the World Cup.

In a news card shared on X, the Sports Minister is quoted as having said, “We’ve spent about $1.1 million to acquire tickets for some fans to support the match”.

Also, Kofi Adams revealed that every player in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will receive an appearance fee of $100,000.

According to the Sports Minister, the appearance fee for the Black Stars has been maintained at $100,000 per player in recent tournaments.

The Sports Minister disclosed that appearance fees for Black Stars players have varied over the years, from $50,000 and $80,000 in earlier editions to as much as $120,000, before being standardised at $100,000.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues programme, Kofi Adams explained, “The appearance fee has been pegged at $100,000 for quite some time, and this year it remains the same. We have not changed it”.

“Some say because the cedi has become stronger, we should increase it, and we said no. If the cedi had become weaker, would you have said we should reduce the dollar amount so that it gives the same cedi equivalent? You wouldn’t,” he said.

Gov’t to recruit 16,000 health workers by end of 2026 – Health Minister

0

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister for Health, has disclosed that the government will recruit 16,000 health workers by 2026.

According to the Health Minister, recruitment processes for about 8,000 of the planned intake have already been completed, adding that further recruitment is expected to be rolled out.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh disclosed that the government is strengthening deployment to underserved areas to address staffing gaps.

Speaking at the 2026 Annual Health Summit in Accra on Tuesday, June 9, Mr Akandoh stated, “In 2025 alone, more than 14,000 health workers were placed on the government payroll. This year, we intend to recruit an additional 16,000 health workers, with recruitment already completed for approximately 8000. We are strengthening deployment to underserved areas”.

“In 2024, only 12 medical doctors accepted postings to underserved regions, and these regions are eight in number. In 2026, we have successfully placed 100 doctors in this same region, and we are not done,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has revealed that there are over 100,000 unemployed health professionals across Ghana.

According to the Health Minister, when the NDC took over power, there were about 74,000 unemployed health professionals, but that number had risen to 100,000 at the end of 2025.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh further admitted that the government cannot absorb all the 100,000 health professionals, although there are some spaces to be filled, attributing the problem to Ghana’s fiscal space.

Speaking in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, April 22, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh stated, “When we took over, initially, it was around 74,000 people, but around the end of 2025, we were around 100,000 health professionals who had been trained and were at home.

“We cannot absorb all the 100,000 people in our health system to get spaces, but of course, there are spaces that have also not been filled. The problem has to do with fiscal space. In every budget, we will only employ what we can pay.”

It will be recalled that Mintah Akandoh had earlier revealed that Ghana would need about GHS6 billion to recruit all 74,000 unemployed health professionals currently at home.

The health minister highlighted that his ministry is working to clear the backlog by collaborating with the Finance Ministry.

Speaking in an interview on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Wednesday, October 15, the Minister explained, “We will need not less than GHS6 billion to be able to absorb all the 74,000 health professionals at home at the moment”.

Mintah Akandoh further clarified the brouhaha surrounding the 13,000 newly recruited nurses and midwives’ clearance.

The health minister once again blamed the former Akufo-Addo administration for issuing clearance without financial backing.

He stated, “The reality is that in 2024, the government started to recruit nurses and midwives. So the summary is that they recruited about 13,500 nurses and midwives and issued clearance”.

“Once you issue clearance, you must make financial provision. Clearance is not just a paper… you issue clearance when indeed you can pay when you recruit the people.”

“The clearance expired on 31st December 2024. What it means is that before the expiration… you must necessarily have all these 13,500 people on the payroll. As at the end of 31st December 2024, not a single one of the 13,500 people were on the payroll,” he added.

I suspect she will retain lawyers to try to challenge her conviction. She has that right as a Ghanaian. She shouldn’t have run away in the first place.

But now that she is back in Ghana, will Yaanom shift the goalpost again?

We should all be ORALISTS! Unless you are a witch”.

0

The Office of the Atukpai Mantse and Gbese Mankralo has debunked media reports alleging the death of Nii Ayi Bonte II, Gbese Mantse and Adonten of the Ga State.

According to the Office of the Atukpai Mantse, the reports are false, unfounded, and without any basis.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the Office disclosed that the circulation of the information has caused unnecessary anxiety among family members, traditional authorities, and subjects.

They also condemned what they described as a malicious act and urged the public to disregard the reports entirely.

The Office of the Atukpai Mantse stressed that matters concerning the welfare and status of traditional leaders are communicated through appropriate customary and official channels and not through unverified social media publications.

Their statement further warned individuals involved in originating or disseminating the information to cease immediately and refrain from such actions, adding that it undermines the dignity of the Gbese Stool and the Ga Traditional Institution.

The statement follows earlier reports that claimed that the Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, a former Hearts of Oak executive, has died.

The alleged reports claimed Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, died after a short illness.

It claimed that the Gbese Mantse passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

Sedina Tamakloe will be given a presidential pardon – Titus Glover predicts

0

Titus Glover, the former Greater Accra Regional Minister, has said the former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, will be given a presidential pardon.

His comments, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, who arrived in Ghana on June 9, 2026, to serve his 10-year prison sentence.

The information gathered suggests that the flight tracking data from FlightAware confirmed that Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu arrived at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, aboard United Airlines flight UA 996.

The man who brutally assaulted a Midwife at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic has been convicted.

The convict has been identified as Desmond Bosomtwe after he physically assaulted a nurse at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic.

Reports suggest the court sentenced Desmond Bosomtwe to a fine of 100 penalty units or 12 months’ imprisonment in default.

He has also been ordered to enter into a 12-month bond of good behaviour, pay GH¢5,000 compensation to the victim, and be barred from visiting any patient at the facility for the next 12 months.

It will be recalled that the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate announced that the Ghana Police Service has arrested a man who brutally assaulted a Midwife at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic.

According to a statement issued by the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate, the incident happened on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

The Regional Health Directorate described the attack as unprovoked, adding that the midwife was carrying out her official duties.

They further disclosed that the suspect is expected to be arraigned before the court on Monday, June 8, 2026.

In a statement issued on Friday, June 5, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate stated, “The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate strongly condemns the assault and battery on one of our staff at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, as captured in a video currently circulating on social media. The staff member, a midwife, was attacked by a patient’s family member on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, while enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy. The attack was unprovoked.

We stand firmly behind the affected midwife and every member of staff across our facilities. They come to work to serve the public, and they must be able to do so without fear of physical harm.

We commend the Ghana Police Service for their swift response, which restored calm to the facility and led to the arrest of the individual alleged to have carried out the attack.

The accused is scheduled to be arraigned before the court on Monday, 8 June 2026. Violence against health workers will not be tolerated.

Per the directive of the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, all grievances must be channelled to the Client Service Desk, which is present in every Ghana Health Service facility. The Client Service Desk will escalate concerns to the appropriate level where the need arises. Assault is not a channel for redress, and it will not be treated as one.

We remain committed to delivering quality health services to the people of the Greater Accra Region and urge all clients to use the appropriate channels and to treat our staff with the same respect with which they are received”.

The Regional Health Directorate statement follows a video that has surfaced of a nurse at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic being allegedly assaulted by a relative of a patient.

Reports suggest the assault occurred at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

According to reports, the nurse was allegedly assaulted by a relative of a patient after requesting the individual to leave the facility when visiting hours had ended.

Information available suggest when the nurse approached the patient’s relative and informed them that visiting hours were over, the situation escalated, resulting in an alleged physical assault.

In a post shared by a netizen on X read, “This incident occurred at Community 22 Polyclinic in Ashaiman on 2nd June 2026. Healthcare workers deserve a safe and respectful working environment while carrying out their duties.

The only “offence” this nurse committed was informing visitors that visiting hours had ended. What happened next was both disturbing and unacceptable”.

Meanwhile, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has disclosed that Ghana, under the Mahama government, has recorded 14 arrests linked to false news and offensive speech in less than 16 months.

MFWA disclosed that the figure is nearly double the number documented during the Akufo-Addo administration.

Following the arrest of 14 for false news in 16 months, a debate has been triggered over whether the Mahama government is simply enforcing long-standing laws in a new digital environment or restricting public speech.

Also, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has fired shots at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Courts, and the Police over their burdensome bail conditions and denials.

According to Haruna Iddrisu, the highhandedness and excessive practices surrounding bail, its denial, and its conditions must come to an end.

He argued that the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

Speaking in a video shared on X, Haruna Iddrrisu stated, “In Ghana today, we have seen excesses, excesses from the police, excesses from the courts, and excesses from EOCO, where persons are denied bail and bail is used as punishment for accused persons.

“That is not the law. It is settled knowledge and settled law that you do not deny an accused person bail or impose excessively burdensome bail conditions,” he said.

“If you uphold the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence, then every person must be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“So, I expect that in Ghana today, we must end the high-handedness and excessiveness in matters relating to bail, the denial of bail, and related conditions,” he added.

Additionally, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Interior Minister, has raised concerns over the unnecessary remand, terrible bail conditions by the police and the courts.

The Interior Minister asserted that the Police remand people anyhow, adding that the court also gives terrible bail conditions that people are not able to meet.

He disclosed that his ministry has been working with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine, on the constitutional amendment.

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak asserted that the passage of the Community Service Bill would help address the challenge, reduce overreliance on remand, and ease congestion in prisons and police cells.

Meanwhile, Shamima Muslim, the Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, has said that President John Dramani Mahama does not have the time to call for the arrest of TikTokers or anyone.

The Deputy Presidential Spokesperson highlighted that President Mahama is not interested in following the bad example of the NPP by eroding the trust of Ghana’s accountability.

Speaking on StarrFM, Shamima Muslim stated, “President Mahama is not interested in following the bad example of the NPP. He is not interested in eroding the trust of our accountability institutions; he is interested in building good governance principles that restore trust in these institutions.

These institutions are not perfect institutions that we all agree on; the judiciary, the legislature, the executive, and the media are not perfect institutions. They are human institutions they can also be influenced.

The security agencies, do you think that President Mahama actually takes the telephone or sends somebody to go and tell the IGP to arrest this person and not give the person bail?

So you think President Mahama has time to send someone to go and arrest a TikToker, then you don’t know who President Mahama is”, she added.

KATH doctors and nurses suspend strike action following Otumfuo’s intervention

0

The doctors and nurses at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have suspended their industrial action over the suspension of Chief Executive Officer Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 9, the Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) announced the suspension following engagements with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, management and other stakeholders.

Part of the statement issued read, “The Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) wishes to inform the general public that the industrial action embarked upon by its members has been suspended with effect from today, 9th June, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.

This decision has been made following fruitful engagements and the timely intervention of His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, Management and other key stakeholders who have demonstrated commitment towards addressing the concerns that led to the industrial action.

While KADA remains committed to ensuring that the issues that occasioned the strike are fully resolved, we have carefully considered the potential impact of the prolonged action on patient care and public health. The safety and well-being of patients and the broader public interest remain central to our responsibilities, and these have informed our decision to suspend the action and continue the dialogue.

KADA expresses its profound gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu I1, the Board, Management, and all stakeholders for their efforts in facilitating dialogue and fostering a path toward an amicable resolution of the outstanding issues.

We are particularly grateful to the National Executive Council (NEC) and membership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) for their unwavering support and intervention in this important matter”.

The statement follows, the Ministry of Health (MoH) in a statement who has said the decision to suspend the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, was taken in the interest of accountability.

According to the Health Ministry, the ongoing industrial action by doctors and nurses at KATH is unfortunate.

The Health Ministry disclosed that the suspension was a carefully considered administrative decision taken in the interest of accountability, patient safety, and adherence to established procedures within the health sector.

In a statement issued on Sunday, June 7, the Ministry wrote, “ The Ministry of Health finds the turn of events at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) unfortunate, where members of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association and Nurses Chapter there have embarked on a strike action following an administrative decision taken against the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo of the hospital, for non-compliance with established administrative procedures relating to the closure of a public health facility.

The decision to suspend the CEO of KATH, who is an appointee of HE the President, John Dramani Mahama, was carefully considered and taken in the interest of institutional accountability, patient safety, and the need to uphold administrative discipline within the health sector.

It is important to place on record that the suspension arose from the public announcement of cessation of admission into the Accident and Emergency unit, which is inconsistent with the directive of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana regarding access to emergency healthcare services.

For the avoidance of doubt, this has nothing to do with the internal arrangements agreed between the hospital and the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate. Further, he was suspended by the administrative head of the hospital (CEO), not as a Medical Officer of the hospital.

It will be recalled that, during the State of the Nation Address, His Excellency directed all public health facilities to ensure that patients seeking emergency care receive the necessary attention and are not turned away under any circumstances.

The Ministry is concerned that this directive was disregarded when the Chief Executive Officer announced the closure of the Accident and Emergency Centre of KATH without prior authorisation from the KATH Board and the Ministry for Health.

The suspension of the CEO is therefore an administrative measure intended to facilitate an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the closure and provide remedies going forward”.

The development follows the brouhaha that followed Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister for Health, who has directed the Board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, for two weeks with immediate effect.

In a letter dated June 5, 2026, the Health Minister asserted that the decision follows the KATH CEO temporary suspension of emergency admissions at the facility.

The Health Minister highlighted that the action was taken in contravention of directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.

He disclosed that the meeting involving the Ministry’s Chief Director, Technical Advisor and Legal Advisor concluded that the CEO’s actions were inconsistent with the President’s directives.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has joined the strike action by the Doctors at KATH.

Sedina Tamakloe arrived in Ghana in a wheelchair, with swollen limbs – Details emerge

0

Following the extradition of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, to Ghana, more details have emerged.

Reports by Daily Graphic journalist Kester Aburam Korankye disclosed that the former MASCOC CEO arrived on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in a wheelchair with swollen limbs.

A family member who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed to the Daily Graphic that she had been unwell before her transfer to Ghana.

“Arriving visibly ill with swollen limbs after being extradited from the United States of America, where she had been receiving medical treatment, a family member who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed her condition to the Daily Graphic upon her arrival on Tuesday,” the report stated.

Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Government spokesperson, has confirmed that Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, has returned to Ghana.

According to Felix Kwaky Ofosu, Sedina was extradited to Ghana on Tuesday, June 9.

He disclosed that Sedina Tamakloe Attionu was immediately taken into Police and Prisons Services custody for preparations for her to begin her 10-year sentence.

In a Facebook post, Felix Kwaky Ofosu stated, “In April, 2024, the High Court convicted and sentenced SEDINA TAMAKLOE-ATTIONU in absentia. In July 2024, the Government of Ghana submitted an extradition request to the United States for her surrender to Ghana to serve her sentence.

After over two years of court proceedings, the United States authorities notified the Government of her surrender in January this year. She arrived in Accra on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

Officials of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service have taken her into custody and are making the necessary preparations for her to begin her sentence.

Meanwhile, the Attorney-General is scheduled to meet his counterparts at the United States Department of Justice for a bilateral discussion on all pending extradition requests between the two countries”.

The development follows a U.S. Magistrate Judge, Daniel J. Albregts of the District of Nevada, ordering that the former MASLOC CEO, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, serve her 10-year prison sentence in Ghana.

“I am not in an English-speaking competition” – Wontumi brush off criticism of his NPP chairmanship bid

0

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, an aspiring National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has dismissed criticism about his English proficiency.

Wontumi argued that people keep saying he does not speak good English, but that does not bother him as he is not in an English-speaking competition.

According to Wontumi, his focus is to regain power in the 2028 general elections and is not bothered by comments questioning his academic credentials or English.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Chairman Wontumi said, “People saying I don’t speak good English doesn’t stop me. I’m unperturbed. I’m not in the national chairmanship race for an English-speaking competition. I’m in it to serve the people, and I will always speak the language the grassroots understand”.

“I’m not here to spoil our constitution but to fulfil it and claim victory for the party. I don’t think the party is concerned about titles; rather, the party wants power”.

“My certificate is my experience. I have been in this for 20 years. I have been the regional chairman three consecutive times. I have the party constitution at heart,” he stated.

“We had elite leaders for the 2024 elections, and we lost, so why don’t we try the grassroots as well? ” he questioned.

Wontumi further argued, “I am coming to alleviate us from the pain of the election we lost. We have learned from our mistakes, and we are going to correct all of them”.

“If I am made chairman, it will debunk all the allegations that if you don’t have a certificate, you can’t rise in the ranks in the NPP. It will give everyone hope that if you work well at the party, you can be promoted to higher positions,” he stated.

“The grassroots, for the first time, will partner with academia. I am going to be a chairman for everyone—a working chairman, a grassroots chairman, and a listening chairman,” he said.

“We will work collectively, and the NPP is going to work again,” he added.

In related news, Wontumi, some months ago, gave an inspiring speech as he aspires to become the national chairman of the party.

According to Chairman Wontumi, leadership in politics is broader than academic qualifications alone.

Speaking to some NPP delegates, Chairman Wontumi stated, “Leadership in politics is broader than academic qualifications alone. Across the world, we have seen this truth: leaders like Abraham Lincoln had limited formal education, yet shaped a nation’s true vision and were resilient. Winston Churchill was not defined by academic brilliance, yet he led Britain through its darkest hour.

Donald Trump, despite not being a career academic politician, mobilised and led one of the most powerful political movements in modern America. Many successful global political leaders have risen not just from the classroom but from practical experience, organisation and connection to the people.

What these examples show is that leadership is not only about learning in the classroom”, he added.

Also, Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said he completed Prempeh College, but his certificate is still there at the school.

Wontumi disclosed that his limited proficiency in the English language will not deter his ability to lead the party and restore it to power in the 2028 elections.

According to Wontumi, he completed Prempeh College, but his certificate is still at the school.

Speaking to party faithfuls during a programme, Wontumi narrated, “I was going to contest the Ashanti Regional Chairman position against former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s deputy minister. If you look at someone who has been an MP for 16 years and compare that to me, who has served as a constituency chairman twice, you would think it was impossible.

“One day, I was invited by a radio station to debate Hon Osei Prempeh, whom I was contesting, in English. This was the toughest election I had ever contested. I had finished Prempeh College, but my certificate is still there. I don’t have it, and how can I debate him in English?”

Wontumi added, “On the day of the debate, the host called me several times, but I declined. I asked myself, how could I, without a certificate, debate a lawyer?

“The host insisted that if I didn’t show up, it would go against me. But I told him that while he had his perspective, I knew I could do the job. You cannot judge me simply because I cannot speak English.”

Greater Accra, the smallest region, is now the most populous – Dr Thompson explains Accra flooding crisis

0

Dr Nii Moi Thompson, the Board Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), has explained the perennial flooding crisis facing the Greater Accra Region.

According to Dr Thompson, the persistent flooding challenges are due to the absence of an effective and coordinated national development strategy.

He explained that the capital’s recurring flood disasters are largely driven by unplanned urban growth.

Dr Thompson details that, based on the 2021 population, Greater Accra, which has the smallest land area in Ghana, is now the most populous region.

On Tuesday, June 9, addressing the Economy and Development Committee of Parliament on the 2024 National Annual Progress Report, Dr Nii Moi Thompson detailed, “Based on the 2021 population, Greater Accra, even though it is the smallest region in terms of land area, 1.4%, is now the most populous region of the 16. So that’s like the perfect storm where every contradiction you can imagine has been put in this little space. And those are the consequences we see: the flooding, the collapsing buildings, and everything.

“You cannot put the bulk of your population in the smallest land area. Population density like 1,680 versus 300 for the region. And so we are perfectly aware of these structural distortions that are actually getting worse,” he said.

He added, “Don’t listen to the propaganda of the past, where people rejected long-term planning. There’s not a single country out there that doesn’t have a long-term plan. They all do. I always tell them the United States has a 100-year plan for creating jobs, from 1950 to 2050. And they have the institutions for that. And we will come back to you with that request in terms of finishing the consolidated national development plan.

He added, “It will consolidate four existing plans that have never been implemented in the last 10 years. The 40-Year Plan, Ghana Beyond Aid, Ghana at 100, and Vision 2057.

“These were all prepared in the last 10 years. None were implemented. Within the same period, China had China 2025. And they went ahead rapidly and transformed their fortunes.”

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre, Kwadwo Twum Boafo, explaining the flooding situation in Accra, has said structures like Villagio should never have been built.

According to Kwadwo Twum Boafo, the site where Villagio used to be located was a whole was a wetland, but was later filled with laterite for structures to be built on the wetland.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Kwadwo Twum Boafo, explained, “So I’ll give you a prime example. Villagio should never have been built. Because if you are old enough to remember, that whole place was marsh. When I say marshland, I mean a wetland.

And the runoff from the Akuapim Hills used to go there. Then we allowed somebody to come and surcharge the soil when I say surcharge the soil, fill that marsh with laterite so that he could build that structure.”

“So what simply happens now is every time it rains, the runoff… You can’t cheat the runoff. It will still come, and it will flood that side of Accra.”

“Do a simple experiment. Put water in this cup here and put this bottle inside it and see what happens… there’ll be an overflow.”

Kwadwo Twum Boafo further added, “Our relationship with natural greenery areas like the Korle Lagoon is terrible. Who made the decision to turn the Korle Lagoon into a [drain]? … Because you put cement on the embankments, so it’s not semi-permeable anymore. God does not do anything just like that”.

He explains natural drainage, salinity, and osmosis in lagoons, noting that concreting them creates barriers.

He further explained, “We have allowed people to build in wetlands. Go to the Ramsar sites… some of our best people were willing Ramsar sites to their relatives.”

Kwadwo Twum Boafo further explained that the whole of Holland was under the water table, but they were able to engineer the country properly to allow the drainage systems to work.

“Anybody who has been to Holland… Netherlands means the lowlands. The whole of Holland is under the water table. But what happens, they have engineered that country properly to allow for the drainage systems to work”, he added.

More rains coming, stay away from flood-prone communities – GMeT warns

0

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has warned Ghanaians of more rains across both coastal and inland areas in the coming days.

In other news, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has said the John Mahama government has no clear-cut roadmap to solve the Accra floods.

The NPP communicator disclosed that Mahama, who has been president before, experienced the most devastating flood disasters this country has seen in its history.

He argued that after the June 3 disaster, Mahama set up a committee, indicating that he was re-engineering Accra, but nothing happened.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, Dennis Miracles Aboagye explained, “A country entrusts its resources, freedoms, and rights to a select few so that they can guide the people and lead them towards prosperity, growth, and safety”.

“So when the leaders we have given that responsibility are merely lamenting to us, it becomes a serious problem.”

“They have failed to tell the people of this country what their roadmap is in solving flooding in Accra. A clear-cut roadmap. We are in a hopeless situation. This government should not pretend as if they just came into office and all of a sudden they are realising how Accra is,” he stated.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye added, “Our president has been president before. In fact, one of the most devastating flood disasters this country has seen in its history happened under his presidency during his first term”.

“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, immediately after the June 3 disaster, set up a committee. In fact, he indicated that he was re-engineering Accra. What happened?” he asked.

He further added, “One of the reasons why a lot of Ghanaians went to vote for His Excellency John Dramani Mahama was because they felt that he would have learned something from the experience he had in the past”.

Eight years in opposition, you come into office with experience. In fact, His Excellency said during the campaign period that we want experience. It was one of his mantras, and a lot of people bought into it.

People were very hopeful. A 1.7 million vote difference speaks a lot. It is a huge mandate”, he observed.

“A president that some people believed in and voted for on the back of your experience, you spend one and a half years out of your few years in office identifying hotspots. That is where the problem is”, he said.

“Tell the people what your roadmap is in ensuring that, moving forward, when it rains for 30 minutes, they will be able to get to their homes. That’s what they want to hear”, he stressed.

Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has shockingly claimed that she has tackled flooding in the Greater Accra Region.

“When will you send Ofori-Atta to Ghana?” – Netizens quiz US Embassy after Sedina Tamakloe’s extradition

0

Ghanaians on X, following the US Embassy in Ghana’s post confirming the extradition of Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, a former MASLOC CEO, netizens have been quizzing the Embassy on when they are going to return former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

The US Embassy in Ghana, in a social media post, disclosed that Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu’s extradition from the US to Ghana is the first extradition since 2009.

According to the United States Embassy in Ghana, Justice has no borders.

In an X post on June 9, 2026, “Justice has no borders. The United States has extradited Sedina Tamakloe Attionu to Ghana, following her conviction on 70+ corruption-related charges, including embezzling more than $6M equivalent in Ghanaian taxpayer funds.

This is our strong U.S.-Ghana law enforcement partnership in action, demonstrating a shared commitment to accountability and the first extradition from the United States to Ghana since 2009”.

According to Ghanaians on X, if the US Embassy in Ghana is clear that justice has no borders, then Ken  Ofori-Atta must be returned to Ghana to face accountability.

Netizen reacting to the US Embassy in Ghana post stated, “When will you send Ken Ofori Atta to Ghana as well to account for money stolen in the MSL deal? We are interested in that case as well”.

A netizen added, “There’s still one big elephant in the room

The former finance minister is still at large in the US. Hope the law continues to take its course”.

“Kudos to America for bringing back the convicted thief when this NDC govt deliberately failed to bring her to face justice. I’m reliably informed there’re arrangements to pardon her by Mahama and the Chief Justice”, one X user added.

A netizen added, “Excellent job, @USEmbassyGhana. Politicians will now think twice before embezzling state funds and stealing from the citizens, knowing full well that there is no safe haven in the West for them to hide. Please try to extradite Hon. Ken Ofori as well. Many thanks!”.

“@USEmbassyGhana, you can only take full credit and applause for a good job done if and only if you complete the work of an extradition by bringing former finance minister Mr Ken Ofori Atta. Just read the comments, and everyone is asking about him. Your work is incomplete”, one X user added.

Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Government spokesperson, has disclosed that Ghana’s Attorney-General, Dominic Ayine, will hold discussions with officials of the United States Department of Justice to address all pending extradition requests between the two countries.

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the high-level bilateral discussions will take place following the successful extradition of former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, to Ghana.

Reports suggest the expected discussion will cover several high-profile cases currently attracting public attention, including Ghana’s request for the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and the United States request for the extradition of a number of individuals wanted in connection with various criminal investigations, including a suspect identified as Abu Trica.

Flooding under NPP wasn’t as serious as what we’re seeing under the NDC – Titus-Glover

0

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, a former Greater Accra Regional Minister, has made a shocking claim over the recent flooding in Accra.

According to Titus-Glover, the flooding under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) wasn’t as serious as what Ghanaians are seeing today under the NDC government.

In a news card shared on GHOne TV, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover is quoted to have said, “The extent of flooding during NPP’s time wasn’t as serious as what we’re seeing under this NDC administration”.

AG to meet US Department of Justice over Ofori-Atta, other extradition requests – Kwakye Ofosu disclosed

0

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Government spokesperson, has disclosed that Ghana’s Attorney-General, Dominic Ayine, will hold discussions with officials of the United States Department of Justice to address all pending extradition requests between the two countries.

In related news, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a Legal practitioner and activist, has alleged that the United States government is using Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, as a bargaining chip against the NDC government.

According to Oliver Barker-Vormawor, if the United States wanted to return Ken Ofori-Atta, they would have bundled him on a flight to Ghana when they cancelled his visa.

He argued that hundreds of West African nations have been sent to Ghana despite Court orders saying they can’t, but the US wants to use Ken Ofori-Atta as leverage against the Government.

In a post shared on X, Oliver Barker-Vormawor wrote, “If the Americans wanted to return Ken Ofori-Atta, the moment they cancelled his visa, they would have bundled him on a flight to Ghana.

100s of West African nations have been sent to Ghana despite Court orders saying they can’t. Some were just bundled despite ongoing court cases and sent to Ghana. We allowed them to do this.

So for me, this is a case of if they wanted, they would.

My suspicion is that they will continue to hold on to him as leverage against the Government, so that the more political pressure mounts on the NDC for failing to bring him, the more they can use him as a bargaining chip to get even more from us.

But two can play that game! ‘Eneke the bird says that since men have learned to shoot without missing, he has learned to fly without perching’.

They need to cast their mind back to what the PNDC did to them on the Soussoudis-Sharon Scranage affair.

Someone tag Mahama and his Ministers for me.

Shalom!”

Sedina Tamakloe taken into custody to begin her 10-year sentence – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

0

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Government spokesperson, has disclosed that the former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, has returned to Ghana.

Meanwhile, the Attorney-General is scheduled to meet his counterparts at the United States Department of Justice for a bilateral discussion on all pending extradition requests between the two countries”.

In a post shared by Ghana Chronicles on Sunday, April 12, 2026, read, “A U.S. Magistrate Judge, Daniel J. Albregts of the District of Nevada, has ordered the extradition of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Christine Tamakloe to Ghana to serve her 10-year sentence.

The court ruled that sufficient evidence exists, citing multiple charges including stealing, conspiracy, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

She has been remanded in U.S. custody pending final approval of her extradition”.

Macroeconomic indicator looking sexy on paper, but Ghanaians are suffering – Mahama gov’t told

0

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an NPP Communicator, has told the John Mahama government that Ghana’s macroeconomic indicators are looking sexy on paper, but Ghanaians are suffering.

The NPP communicator slammed government officials over their internal battles while many Ghanaians continue to battle with unemployment, rising transport costs, utility increases and delays in payments to some workers.

Miracles Aboagye questioned the impact of government policies on the daily lives of citizens.

According to Miracles Aboagye, Ghana’s macroeconomic indicators are looking sexy on paper but mean little if ordinary citizens do not feel improvements in their lives.

Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show, Miracles Aboagye stated, “At a time when young people do not have jobs, unemployment has increased”.

“Let this government tell you one major policy in the last 16 months they have introduced that has had a life-changing impact on Ghanaian people,” he stated.

“Every macroeconomic indicator is looking sexy on paper”.

His comments follow the public dispute between the Ministry of Finance and the Agric Ministry over the GH¢1.6 billion budget allocation.

According to the Finance Ministry, the allocation to the Agric Ministry represents 85% of its 2026 budget allocation for Goods and Services and Capital Expenditure.

The Finance Ministry has since published official documents confirming over GH¢1.6 billion released to the Food and Agriculture Ministry.

“It further explained that all releases except funding to the National Food Buffer Stock Company were initiated by MoFA through standard procedures on the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), with each transaction supported by requisition dates, journal numbers, approval dates, and warrant numbers”, reports stated.

“This is clear proof that the Ministry of Finance has released over GH¢1.6 billion to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, representing 85% of MOFA’s 2026 budget allocation for Goods and Services and Capital Expenditure (CAPEX),” the ministry said.

“For Goods and Services, all the requests were initiated by MOFA itself, with the exception of the release made to the National Food Buffer Stock Company,” the statement said.

“As shown in the spreadsheet, every transaction is backed by a requisition date, journal number, approval date, and warrant number,” the ministry stated.

“The journal and warrant numbers are system-generated (GIFMIS). This is the standard process through which all ministries, departments, and agencies generate and process requests on GIFMIS.”

However, the Ministry of Agriculture quickly countered and disputed the claim, citing February letters capping early spending at GH¢453 million for goods and services, with no new authorisations since.

In a press release by Samuel Hunter, the Media Liaison Officer of the Minister for Food and Agriculture, called for a stop to the infantile propaganda before it explodes.

Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) in its release stated, “The attention of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has been drawn to claims by the Ministry of Finance that it has released GH¢1.6 billion, representing 85% of MOFA’s 2026 budget allocation. These claims do not align with the official budget execution documents issued by the Ministry of Finance itself.

On 15th February 2026, the Ministry of Finance issued a Commitment Authorisation to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. However, just four days later, on 19th February 2026, the Ministry of Finance issued the 2026 First and Second Quarter Budget Allotment Letter, which explicitly stated that, notwithstanding the contents of the Commitment Authorisation, MOFA’s total expenditure for the first half of the year should not exceed GH¢910 million.

More significantly, the accompanying allotment schedule further restricted actual spending between January and June 2026 to approximately GH¢453 million, covering all expenditures, including staff compensation, contract commitments, and operational activities’.

Why Martin Kpebu fears future arrest if NPP comes to power

0

Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, has opened up about his fear of being arrested should the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) come back to power.

His comments follow some members of the opposition NPP who have warned the NDC-led government over their excessive bail conditions in recent corruption-related cases.

According to Sam Pyne, Former Ashanti Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Kumasi Mayor, if such trends continue, the next NPP government might as well launch a One District, One EOCO Office initiative.

He further warned that when the NPP comes to power, the NDC appointees will have to bring the crucified Christ on the cross as their bail conditions.

However, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has fired shots at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Courts, and the Police over their burdensome bail conditions and denials.

Galamseyers have become emboldened; invoke the gods against them – EPA urges Chiefs

0

The Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Tarkwa, Derick Ashia Logo, has called on the Chief in the area to invoke the gods against agaisnt illegal miners, commonly known as galamseyers.

According to Derick Ashia Logo, galamseyers have become so emboldened and now even pose threats to enforcement officers.

He asserted that illegal miners are not prepared to stop what they are doing, despite the enforcement efforts.

Derick Ashia’s logo highlighted that illegal mining sites are now heavily fortified, calling on Chiefs who are custodians of land and traditional authority to invoke the spirits in water bodies and in the forests against them.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, the Regional Director of the EPA in Tarkwa stated, “We have come to realise that as we do our enforcement and monitoring, when we speak to these galamseyers, they are not prepared to stop what they are doing. They are so emboldened that they have ammunition on site, and if you’re not well prepared, you can lose your life”.

“We believe that the chiefs who are custodians of the lands in these communities have the power to invoke the spirits in water bodies and in the forests. They should call their people together and let them know that anybody who goes into the water body or forest to mine without the appropriate permit should die,” he said.

“The government should come up with a policy. If you fail to protect the water bodies and forests and allow people to destroy them, you should be de-stooled. I believe no chief is prepared to be destooled, so they will have no reason but to help protect the water bodies and our forests,” he added.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has disclosed that cooperative mining is Ghana’s most viable pathway to responsible small-scale mining and job creation.

According to the Lands Minister, the natural resources belong to Ghanaians, but it is incumbent on Ghana to employ mining methods that do not pose a threat to our environment.

He highlighted that mineral wealth must be harnessed in a manner that creates jobs while protecting the environment.

Kofi Buah detailed that the cooperative mining forms part of the government’s efforts to replace illegal and destructive mining practices, expressing concern over the devastating impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s natural resources.

The Lands Minister asserted that several forest reserves have been degraded, with major rivers and water bodies heavily polluted with harmful chemicals.

Speaking at the launch of the Akyem Kotoku Cooperative Mining Scheme in the Birim North District, the Lands Minister stated, “The natural resources belong to Ghanaians. It is incumbent on us to employ mining methods that do not pose a threat to our environment”.

The Lands Minister further announced that young people in Birim North would be trained and certified to engage in responsible mining, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to operate safely, sustainably, and in compliance with regulations.

According to the Lands Minister, the programme would be inclusive, with no youth in the district left behind as the government works to expand opportunities within the small-scale mining sector.

He further disclosed that the success of the cooperative mining scheme will not only create employment and improve livelihoods but also help restore public confidence.

The Lands Minister also stressed that Ghana’s mining industry lies in balancing economic development with environmental protection, adding that cooperative mining provides a feasible framework for realising both objectives.

Earlier,  Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States of America, Victor Smith, had announced that former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu will face a US Court on January 21 over possible extradition to Ghana.

According to Victor Smith, Sedina Tamakloe’s court appearance is a critical step in the extradition process.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, January 16, Victor Smith stated, “In this particular case in America, she was arrested by the US Marshals. For now, they are not allowing us to visit, but she has to go to court. My information is that there was an extradition request by the Ghana government back in 2024 from the Attorney General’s Department.

“Once they were ready to effect the request, they went for her. She is being kept until she sees the judge on the 21st of this month, and the judge will decide. If she has good reasons why she must not be extradited, her legal representation will make that submission to the judge,” he explained.

Earlier, Victor Smith revealed Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu was arrested by the US Marshals and is being detained at the Nevada Southern Detention Centre in the USA.

In a statement issued on January 15, 2026, and signed by the ambassador, read, “I can today confirm that Mrs Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu is being detained at the Nevada Southern Detention Centre.

Watch the viral video that got Nyinahini Catholic SHS teacher arrested after assaulting a female student

0

A teacher at Nyinahini Catholic Senior High School has been arrested after a viral video captured him assaulting a female student on campus.

Some netizens reacting to the video stated, “This is very serious. I know they are going to blame the girl simply because she is young. That is the classic Ghanaian vibe. The teacher went very far by fighting the girl. It seems he has lost his moral authority. He has to be investigated….”.

A netizen added, “The global community appears to hold differing perspectives on gender-related issues; had the female student been capable of overpowering the instructor, it is unlikely that calls for her apprehension would have materialised”.

One X user added, “You see that school, Mawuli School at Ho, that at a point went rosy on the internet nu; there’s a French teacher there called Nufe. I swear to the almighty God that Nufe used to beat people with a metal rake, mop and anything at all he could grab. Man really left me traumatized”.

A netizen added, “But wait ooo what is a male teacher doing around a girls’ dormitory, talk less fighting her? It’s always those people from that particular region doing nonsense”.

“I think it’s student first don’t know about that in our country, but no matter how threatening a student is, you don’t get to take the matter into your hands. The first point of contact should be the school authorities; if they don’t act, then maybe the police. But never take matters into your hands- no, no!”, one X user added.

One last X user added, “Upon seeing this video, it breaks my heart in a way; per what is going on, it’s an assault on the younger one. But what will even give you that confidence to go blow to blow with your teacher! That’s another angle. Students these days err, as a teacher, you should be very careful”.

President Macron to speak on Reparatory Justice hosted in Accra – Ablakwa

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, has disclosed that the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, will speak on Reparatory Justice hosted in Accra.

Ablakwa, in a post on X, confirms that the President of France will address the Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice being hosted in Accra by President Mahama.

He disclosed that President Macron is expected to welcome a good-faith dialogue on historical injustice against Africans.

In a post on X, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa wrote, “The Government of Ghana confirms that the President of France will address the Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice being hosted in Accra by President Mahama.

President Macron is expected to welcome a good-faith dialogue on historical injustice against Africans and outline France’s commitment to Reparatory Justice following the landmark adoption of the Ghana-led UN resolution declaring the transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity”.

The information gathered suggests H.E. Emmamuenl Macron will be in Accra, Ghana, between 17th and 19th June, 2026.

The development follows President John Dramani Mahama, through a statement issued by the Government of Ghana, has welcomed a statement by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV acknowledging and apologising for the historical role played by the Holy See of the Catholic Church in legitimising and sustaining the transatlantic slave trade.

According to President Mahama, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV’s apology is particularly significant and refreshing, as it demonstrates a willingness to confront difficult historical truths in the interest of justice, understanding and reconciliation.

Parts of the statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Thursday, May 28, read, “The Government of the Republic of Ghana warmly welcomes the historic statement by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV acknowledging and apologising for the role played by the Holy See in legitimising and sustaining the enslavement of Africans and the transatlantic slave trade. The statement represents an act of moral courage on the part of the Pope and an important contribution to the ongoing global pursuit of historical truth, human dignity and justice.

Ghana recognises His Holiness Pope Leo XIV’s longstanding commitment to service, compassion and the dignity of the human person. Throughout his work, he has advanced principles of social justice, solidarity with the vulnerable, dialogue across communities and moral responsibility in responding to the challenges of our changing world.”

The statement added, “For five centuries, millions of Africans and people of African descent endured unimaginable suffering and dehumanisation through systems of racialised chattel enslavement whose effects continue to shape societies and communities across the world today. Honest recognition of this painful history remains an essential step toward healing, reconciliation and a more just future.

President John Mahama considers this acknowledgement particularly significant at a time when the international community is undertaking deeper reflection on the historical consequences of slavery and colonialism. It reinforces the growing global understanding that confronting historical injustices demands truth-telling and moral responsibility as essential foundations for justice and reconciliation.

Ghana notes that during negotiations on the Resolution, questions relating to historical references concerning the role of the Church, including references to Papal Bulls and related historical issues associated with the transatlantic slave trade, generated extensive discussions. Against this background, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV’s apology is particularly significant and refreshing, as it demonstrates a willingness to confront difficult historical truths in the interest of justice, understanding and reconciliation”.

ALARM BLOWS – PPA fingered for allegedly shielding Big Push Road contracts from scrutiny

0

The Fourth Estate has blown an alarm on the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) for shielding President John Mahama’s flagship Big Push road project from scrutiny.

According to The Fourth Estate, the PPA has denied them access to information on procurements under the government’s flagship Big Push programme.

The Fourth Estate disclosed that on February 16, 2026, they submitted a right to information (RTI) application requesting road contracts approved by the PPA under the Big Push programme, adding that the PPA responded on March 3, stating that it is unable to provide the information as they do not approve the contracts.

The Fourth Estate in a news article highlighted a series of times their request was rejected: “In March 2026, The Fourth Estate, in an updated application, requested from the PPA information on road contract procurement that the Authority had approved since January 2025. But the Information Officer of the PPA refused to respond to the application. Under the Right to Information Act 2019, Act 989, it is deemed a refusal when an information officer fails to respond to an application.

Subsequently, The Fourth Estate, through an internal appeal, petitioned the CEO of the PPA, in line with Section 31 of the law and in the hope that the head of the institution would make a different determination from the Information Officer.

But the May 29 response to the team further affirmed the PPA’s decision to deny The Fourth Estate access to information on their approvals of road contract procurements”.

PPA’s Acting Director Legal, in a letter dated May 29, 2026, stated that the “PPA is unable to provide the requested breakdown of road sector procurement approval requests submitted between 1st January 2025 and 28th February 2026 by the Ghana Highway Authority, Department of Urban Roads and Department of Feeder Roads, together with the related follow-ups.”

According to The Fourth Estate, the PPA’s justification is inconsistent with its application, which requested information on procurement approvals of road contracts (not the road contracts), which lie with the Authority.

They disclosed that, under the procurement law, any public entity seeking to use single-source procurement must write to the Authority and justify why they want to use the uncompetitive method, or, where the method is used, the entity must seek ratification from the PPA.

The Fourth Estate stressed that the PPA’s refusal to release information adds to a recent trend of public institutions denying RTI requests.

It will be recalled that The Fourth Estate publication unearthed that the Road Ministry awarded 81 sole-sourced contracts worth over GHS73 billion in 7 months.

Following that expose, President John Dramani Mahama instructed his office to obtain the full detailed report from the Fourth Estate concerning the Road Ministry’s GH¢73b Big Push sole-sourcing contracts.

According to President John Dramani Mahama, his office is to conduct a study of the various allegations presented in the report.

President Mahama also directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to answer all the allegations made in the report.

Speaking during a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, March 30, Mahama explained, “I note the recent expose by the Fourth Estate on procurement processes related to the award of contracts under the Big Push programme. While sole sourcing is legal under certain circumstances under our current procurement law, we all agree that open, transparent tenders are always preferable for achieving competitive pricing and value for money.

“Although we’ve seen snippets of the investigation from the media, I’ve instructed my office to obtain the full detailed report from the Fourth Estate and to conduct a study of the various allegations presented in the report. We’re also requesting the Ministry of Roads and Highways to present a detailed response to those allegations made therein, in order to inform the government’s action on the matter,” he said.

Also, Mahama has announced that his government will introduce amendments to the Public Procurement Act to limit single sourcing.

“And it is precisely for such situations that I announced that the government will introduce amendments to the Public Procurement Act to limit single sourcing, to promote greater transparency and ensure proper value for money for the money we spend on projects. I’ve also requested the Minister of Finance to fast-track the setup of the independent value-for-money office, since the amendment to the procurement legislation will require that all single-source procurements be subject to rigorous value-for-money review,” he said.

However, following President Mahama’s request, the Presidency is yet to release its findings on the Road Ministry awarding 81 sole-sourced contracts worth over GHS73 billion in 7 months.

Two private citizens petition Chief of Staff over the alleged ‘cash-for-awards’ scheme

0

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has been petitioned by two private citizens to investigate and sanction government appointees implicated in the cash-for-awards scheme at the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards held on June 6, 2026.

It will be recalled that some big-name appointees of  President John Dramani Mahama have been fingered in the cash-for-awards saga controversy surrounding the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards Scheme.

Winners on the night were the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who received the Overall Best Performing Minister award; Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who was named Best Male Performing Minister for 2026; and Dorcas Toffey, the Deputy Minister of Transport, who emerged as Best Deputy Minister at the awards ceremony.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, was adjudged Best Female Minister. Also, the NSS boss Ruth Seddoh won the best female CEO, with Professor Gyamo winning the overall best CEO, and the DVLA boss Julius Kotey also won the promising CEO, with Rockson Dafeamakpor winning the best MP.

Also, independent candidate for Gomoa Central, Kwame A Plus, won the most hardworking MP.

Following the dust settling on the awards night, a dramatic twist has emerged with the CEO of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Kpessa-Whyte, blowing the alarm on the controversial “Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Honours”.

According to the SIGA boss, he was asked to pay to receive an award at the “Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Honours”.

The private citizens, Kwaku DA Takyi, also known as Sir-Obama Pokuase, and Kamaldeen Ibrahim, highlighted that the allegation, if proven, could undermine public confidence.

Portions of the petition read, “We respectfully write to petition your high office to initiate an immediate investigation into allegations that certain government appointees paid sums ranging between GH¢25,000 and GH¢50,000 to secure recognition in an awards scheme dubbed the “6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards,” which took place on Saturday, June 6, 2026”.

“It is our respectful contention that, these allegations, if proven to be true, would undermine the integrity of public office, erode public confidence in government appointees, and violate the ethical standards expected of public servants”, the petitioners noted.

“Public office holders are entrusted with the responsibility of serving the people with honesty, transparency and accountability, and as such, any conduct that creates the perception of purchasing honours or public recognition is inconsistent with these principles”

“President Mahama has consistently affirmed his commitment to accountability and good governance, and therefore a prompt and impartial response to these allegations will reinforce public trust and demonstrate that no public official is above scrutiny”,the petition added.

Meanwhile, the President of the Republic, John Mahama, has directed all Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers of state institutions, and other political appointees to refrain from participating in, sponsoring, endorsing, attending, or accepting awards from private award schemes and related events unless expressly authorised by the Office of the President.

This was made known by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama.

Zeepay faces renew pressure as Zeemoney shuts down in Barbados

0

Reports coming in suggest Ghanaian fintech entrepreneur founder of Zeepay, Andrew Takyi-Appiah is facing renewed scrutiny after Zeemoney Barbados Limited shut down operations following enforcement action by the Central Bank of Barbados.

The information gathered suggests the Central Bank of Barbados suspended Zeemoney Barbados Limited’s license in May 2026 over concerns about financial condition, governance, and regulatory compliance, leading to voluntary wind-up.

Andrew Takyi-Appiah’s Zeemoney, focused on remittances and mobile money services across four Barbados locations, is a Caribbean expansion of Ghanaian fintech Zeepay.

The recent event in Barbados has now intensified scrutiny on Takyi-Appiah amid a simultaneous High Court in Ghana creditor petition seeking to wind up Zeepay over an alleged unpaid US$1.22 million debt from a 2024 foreign exchange agreement.

A news article by NorvanReports detailed, “Ghanaian fintech entrepreneur Andrew Takyi-Appiah is facing renewed scrutiny after Zeemoney Barbados Limited, a money transfer company he headed in the Caribbean, shut down operations following enforcement action by the Central Bank of Barbados.

The development comes at a delicate time for Zeepay Ghana Limited, the Ghanaian fintech company founded by Takyi-Appiah, which is already facing a creditor’s petition at the Commercial Division of the High Court in Accra seeking its official winding up over an alleged unpaid debt of US$1,223,250.

According to Barbados Today, Zeemoney Barbados Limited, a fintech company used by Barbadians and foreign nationals to transfer money, has shut down its operations after the Central Bank of Barbados suspended its licence from May 5 to June 4, 2026. The report identified Andrew Takyi-Appiah as Chief Executive Officer of Zeemoney Barbados Limited.

The Central Bank’s action barred Zeemoney from conducting money or value transmission services during the suspension period. According to the regulator, the action followed a supervisory review and subsequent developments that “materially deepened” concerns regarding the company’s financial condition, governance, operational continuity and regulatory compliance.

At the end of the suspension period, Zeemoney did not resume operations. Instead, the company applied to the Central Bank of Barbados for approval to voluntarily wind up its operations, saying it would work with the regulator to ensure the process was carried out in an orderly manner and inform customers how to access their funds in due course.

Zeemoney reportedly operated four locations in Barbados, including its headquarters at Dome Mall in Warrens and branches in Speightstown, Hastings and Sheraton Mall Annex.

The company was involved in international remittances, mobile money and digital transfers, wallet and payment services, and transfer termination into bank accounts, debit cards and mobile wallets.

Barbados Today described Zeemoney as appearing to be part of Zeepay’s broader expansion into the Caribbean. The report also described Takyi-Appiah as a Ghanaian fintech entrepreneur who founded Zeepay in 2015, one of Africa’s major cross-border mobile money and remittance companies.

The Barbados development is significant because it comes while Zeepay Ghana is facing a serious court action in Ghana.

As earlier reported by NorvanReports, Obsidian Achernar Limited has filed a creditor’s petition seeking to wind up Zeepay Ghana Limited over an alleged unpaid debt of US$1,223,250.

According to the petition filed at the High Court Commercial Division in Accra, Obsidian Achernar and Zeepay entered into a foreign exchange agreement on or about June 4, 2024, under which the petitioner agreed to provide foreign exchange services and working capital support to Zeepay.

The petitioner alleges that Zeepay became indebted to it in the aggregate sum of US$2,446,500 and GHS 567,085.72.

The alleged debt, according to the petition, is an amount US$1,621,500 in respect of the working capital support, comprising a short-term credit line, and GHS 502,262 as outstanding payment in respect of excess cedi transfers made into Zeepay’s account.

Obsidian Achernar claims that Zeepay later proposed to settle the debt in two instalments. The first payment of US$1,223,250 was to be made no later than March 31, 2025, while the second and final payment of another US$1,223,250, together with a cedi payment of GHS 546,000, was to be made no later than April 30, 2025.

According to the petition, Zeepay made the first dollar payment and later settled the Ghana cedi component. However, Obsidian Achernar alleges that the second dollar payment of US$1,223,250 remains unpaid.

The petition also refers to an email communication dated May 7, 2025, in which Andrew Takyi-Appiah, described in the court filing as Zeepay’s Managing Director, allegedly promised to clear the cedi component before the end of May 2025.

Obsidian Achernar argues that while the cedi component was eventually paid, Zeepay made no mention of the outstanding dollar component and took no steps to settle it.

The petitioner claims it served a final letter before action and statutory demand on Zeepay on February 16, 2026, demanding payment within seven days and warning that legal proceedings, including winding-up proceedings, would be commenced if payment was not made.

The claims in the Ghana case remain allegations before the court, and Zeepay Ghana will have the opportunity to respond.

Still, the simultaneous pressure in Ghana and Barbados raises broader questions about governance, liquidity, regulatory compliance and operational resilience in cross-border fintech operations linked to Takyi-Appiah’s business interests.

The Central Bank of Barbados did not cite the Ghana court petition as a basis for its action against Zeemoney. Its stated concerns related specifically to Zeemoney Barbados and covered financial condition, governance, operational continuity and regulatory compliance.

But the overlap in leadership, the nature of the businesses and the timing of the two developments are difficult to ignore.

For fintech and remittance companies, trust is the foundation of the business model. Customers hand over money because they expect funds to move securely and promptly. Regulators issue licences because they expect strong governance, proper controls, financial soundness and continuity planning. Counterparties enter transactions because they expect obligations to be honoured.

When a regulator in one jurisdiction suspends a money transfer company over concerns about financial condition, governance, compliance and operational continuity, while a related Ghanaian fintech brand faces a creditor’s winding-up petition over an alleged unpaid dollar debt, the market is entitled to ask hard questions.

Are governance structures keeping pace with cross-border expansion? Are liquidity and foreign exchange obligations being prudently managed? Are subsidiaries adequately supervised? Are customers and counterparties protected when pressure emerges in one market? And how transparent are the corporate links between affiliated fintech entities operating across jurisdictions?

These questions do not amount to findings of wrongdoing. But they go to the heart of public confidence in financial technology companies handling cross-border payments and remittances.

The promise of African fintech remains powerful. It is built on faster transfers, cheaper remittances, digital inclusion and deeper connections between Africa and its diaspora.

But the Zeepay-Zeemoney developments show that growth alone is not enough.

In financial services, expansion must be matched by governance. Innovation must be matched by compliance. And ambition must be matched by the ability to protect customers, honour obligations and satisfy regulators in every jurisdiction where a company operates. For Zeemoney Barbados, the next step is an orderly wind-up under regulatory supervision.

For Zeepay Ghana, the immediate issue is the Accra court process. For Andrew Takyi-Appiah, the bigger challenge is restoring confidence in the wider fintech story he has helped build at a time when both regulators and creditors are asking tougher questions”.

Cooperative mining to protect the environment and create jobs – Lands Minister assures

0

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has disclosed that cooperative mining is Ghana’s most viable pathway to responsible small-scale mining and job creation.

Earlier, a video surfaced on social media alleging that the Abirem NDC constituency executives are angry at Lands and Natural Resources Minister Armah Kofi Buah.

Reports alleged that Kofi Buah was blocked from launching the government’s cooperative mining scheme after he allegedly bought the  “Best Minister” award at the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards.

A Joy News footage shared on X showed a chaotic outdoor crowd of men pushing metal barriers and gathering near vehicles and buildings.

The development follows Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who won the Best Performing Minister at the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Awards.

Mahama to assess appointees’ performance ahead of possible reshuffle – Presidency

0

The Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, has hinted that President John Mahama will soon conduct an assessment of appointees’ performance ahead of a possible reshuffle.

According to Callistus Mahama, the ministers and Chief Executive Officers of state institutions will all be assessed “based on tangible outcomes, measurable impact, effective service delivery, prudent management of public resources, and the successful implementation of Government policies and programmes”.

In a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, June 8, Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, warned appointees against taking private awards and hinted that President Mahama will soon undertake a comprehensive review of all ministers and heads of state institutions to determine their retention, reassignment, or removal from office.

Parts of the statement read, “Accordingly, Ministers and Chief Executive Officers are reminded that their performance will be assessed based on tangible outcomes, measurable impact, effective service delivery, prudent management of public resources, and the successful implementation of Government policies and programmes.

His Excellency the President wishes to emphasise that, in due course, the Presidency will undertake a comprehensive review of the performance of Ministers and Chief Executive Officers. The findings of this review shall constitute a key basis for decisions relating to retention in office, reassignment of responsibilities, and any future Cabinet or executive restructuring.

Public officials are therefore encouraged to devote their full attention to the execution of their mandates and the delivery of results for the people of Ghana rather than seeking or participating in external recognition schemes of questionable credibility.

Your cooperation in this matter is highly appreciated.

Please accept the assurances of the highest consideration of His Excellency, the President of the Republic”.

In related news, the NDC, in a statement, had earlier urged the public to disregard circulating reports of a purported ministerial reshuffle.

According to the NDC, the purported ministerial reshuffle is false and misleading.

The party further cautions that deliberate misinformation continues to undermine public discourse and calls on citizens to verify all official information before sharing.

In a press statement by the NDC, it read, “As we all strive to curb the menace of deliberate misinformation, some individuals will stop at nothing to poison the atmosphere.

The official spokesperson for this administration is Hon Felic Kwakye Ofosu. Kindly verify any such information through his official channels before sharing it.

The Cybersecurity Act have serious implications, so let us all be mindful and responsible in our communication”.

The NDC statement follows a purported list claiming that President Mahama has announced ministerial and Deputy ministerial changes.

The so-called list saw Ministers like Sam George, Eric, and Dr Frank Amoakohene, with other appointments being terminated.

Also, the list saw some reassignments and new appointments, with Dr Zanetor Rawlings being named as the Defence Minister among others.

Meanwhile, Fifi Kwetey, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) General Secretary, has revealed that there will be a ministerial reshuffle of ministers in the John Mahama administration.

According to the NDC General Secretary, from what he is picking up in the corridors of power, there will be a ministerial reshuffle, but he cannot say how soon.

Speaking on TV3 Hot Issues, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey explained, “It is always important that despite the fact that things have gone on very well in the first year, the president, who is the leader, will always want to see where things can still be done better”.

“A reshuffle is normally done within that context, where you want to see in this particular sector, even though things are okay, it can still do better if I move somebody else to that place or in this place, maybe this one is not too effective in this sector”.

“So I think a reshuffle will be a possibility, and what I pick up from the corridors, yes, we definitely are going to have a reshuffle. I wouldn’t be able to say how soon, but definitely”.

A medical condition forced Dr Amoakohene’s wife to deliver in the UK – Spokesperson details

0

The Special Aide and official spokesperson for the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, Hussein Ibrahim, has clarified why the minister’s wife gave birth in the UK.

According to Hussein Ibrahim, a medical condition forced Dr Frank Amoakohene’s wife to deliver in the UK, adding that it was never the plan for her to give birth there.

He disclosed that a week before the Regional Minister and his wife were due to return, the wife developed a condition known as placenta praevia.

Hussein Ibrahim detailed that doctors advised that if she attempted to fly back to Ghana, it could put her life, the life of the unborn baby, or both at risk.

Special Aide and official spokesperson boldly added that Dr Frank Amoakohene’s wife did not leave Ghana with the initial intention of giving birth abroad.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa FM, Hussein Ibrahim explained, “They travelled to the UK and had about a week left before returning to Ghana when the situation arose. My boss informed me that his wife had developed a medical condition called placenta praevia and was experiencing bleeding.

“It was never their intention to travel there to give birth. The condition forced the situation. The doctors advised that it would be unsafe for her to fly back to Ghana, so they recommended that she be admitted and managed there,” he said.

It will be recalled that some Ghanaians on the social media platform X are mounting pressure on the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, after he shared photos of his wife who delivered a bouncy baby.

In a post shared by Dr Frank Amoakohene, he wrote, “Meanwhile, congratulations to my lovely wife for blessing our family with a bouncing baby boy. We are deeply grateful to God for this precious gift and the joy he has brought into our lives”.

In another post, the Ashanti Regional Minister stated, ” Late-night Father Duties.

I think I also deserve some congratulations for working all round”.

However, following the post, netizens have been calling out the Ashanti Regional Minister for flying his wife to deliver their child in the United States instead of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he works with the wife.

A netizen wrote, “You worked at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and your wife also worked there.

Yet when it was time for her to give birth, she did not use the same hospital where both of you were employed.

Instead, she was flown to the United States at taxpayers’ expense because of a Green Card.

Dr Frank Amoakohene”.

Another X user added, “I don’t think you should have exposed the fact that you went to have your child abroad.  Why should others have children in Ghana, and you, a minister of state, go outside to have your child there?  I like and admire you, but you’re making a fool of those who put you in power. Make Ghana better so we will not need to go abroad and have kids”.

Meanwhile, Paul Adom-Otchere, a Broadcast Journalist, has alleged that the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, took taxpayers’ $40,000 to send his wife abroad to deliver.

According to Adom-Otchere, Dr Amoakohene is robbing Ghanaians by taking his wife to America to have a child.

He asserted that the Ashanti Regional Minister flew his wife to America to have a baby, quizzing whether ordinary Ghanaians can also wife fly to America to have a baby when they are not government officials.

The veteran journalist called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a trip by the Ashanti Regional Minister and his wife to the United States.

Paul Adom-Octhere questioned how the  Ashanti Regional Minister funded his wife’s childbirth trip to the US.

He claimed that the regional minister’s salary is not a salary that could have taken him to America, alleging that the cost of the trip could have been between $40,000 and $50,000.

“Ghana have a very weak leader” – Miracles Aboagye

0

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has labelled President John Mahama as a very weak leader.

According to Miracles Aboagye, Mahama is to blame for the ongoing disagreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture over the release of funds for agricultural programmes.

He argued that the public dispute points to a leadership problem at the highest level of government.

Miracles Aboagye claimed that the tensions within the administration have existed for some time and the latest clash between the two ministries is evidence of that.

Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show, Miracles Aboagye stated, “This is just the result of a long-standing issue that has been going on within this government that the president has been weak in addressing,” he said.

He further claimed that the matter goes beyond the disagreement over agricultural funding and reflects deeper challenges within the government.

“We have a very weak leader,” he added.

His comments follows the Ministry of Finance has firmly reiterated that it has released more than GH¢1.6 billion to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).

“It further explained that all releases except funding to the National Food Buffer Stock Company were initiated by MoFA through standard procedures on the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), with each transaction supported by requisition dates, journal numbers, approval dates, and warrant numbers” reports stated.

We never wrote to Kpessa-Whyte asking for money for an award – CEO of Big Events Ghana

0

Prince Mackay, the Chief Executive Officer of Big Events Ghana, has refuted allegations that the organisers had approached the Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Prof Michael Kpessa-Whyte, to seek sponsorship in exchange for an award.

The CEO of Big Events Ghana disclosed that they did not approach Prof. Kpessa-Whyte personally to sponsor the event in return for an award.

According to Prince Mackay, they wrote to SIGA as an institution for a sponsorship request, not directly to Prof. Kpessa-Whyte in his personal capacity.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Monday, June 8, Prince Mackay clarified, “I would like to start by saying thank you to Professor Whyte for his support of the event. We are an event company. Whenever we organise events, we send sponsorship letters out there. It’s not the first time it has happened”.

“I want to repeat, we didn’t write to Professor Whyte in person. We never asked him to sponsor the award. It was SIGA as a body that we wrote to, where he is the CEO,” he said.

“If I wrote a letter for you to sponsor me and you refused to sponsor me, why then would you put a statement out there that I came to solicit money for an award? That is not what I did, or what the organisation did,” he said.

Also, the Secretariat of the Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Honours has dismissed claims that the award scheme was influenced by financial contributions, sponsorship, or any form of payment.

According to the Secretariat, the selection was strictly based on merit and service to national development.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 8, the Secretariat disclosed, “No individual or institution is required to provide financial support in order to be considered for recognition, selected for an Honour, or receive an award. Recognition decisions under the Honours remain independent of stakeholder engagements associated with the organisation of the programme”.

His comment follows, Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, who has blown the alarm on the controversial “Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Honours”.

According to the SIGA boss, he was asked to pay to receive an award at the “Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Honours”.

Kpessa-Whyte highlighted that attendance at the event to receive the supposed honour was tied to payment either of a sponsorship package of GH¢50,000 or the purchase of a dinner table of eight at GH¢25,000.

In a post shared on X the SIGA boss, Kpessa-Whyte, stated, “Out of caution, I advised my staff to contact the organisers and seek clarity. It was only then that we discovered that attendance at the event to receive the supposed honour was tied to payment.

The options communicated were either a sponsorship package of GH¢50,000 or the purchase of a dinner table for eight at GH¢25,000.

In other words, the path to public recognition appeared to have been tied to financial contribution.

I opted not to be part of it.”

“The opulence in your current administration is so so so sickening” – Mahama told

0

Samuel Koku Anyidoho, a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has fumed, claiming that the level of opulence in the current Mahama administration is so so so sickening.

According to Koku Anyidoho, even the “property-owning” NPP NEVER displayed such disgusting opulence.

He warned that the NDC grassroots may soon rise up against some government appointees over their extravagant displays of wealth.

His comment follows a video of Dorcas Affo-Toffey, who had customised the number plate of her Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon to read “Jomoro MP.”

Koku Anyidoho fired shots at Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Member of Parliament for the Jomoro Constituency and Deputy Minister for Transport.

In a post on X, Koku Anyidoho wrote, “The opulence in this current Administration is so so so sickening.

NDC, a Party that was birthed by a revolution, is now brazenly displaying such vulgar opulence?

An MP, Deputy Minister, decides to customise the number plate of her vehicle? This is so so so unacceptable!

Even the “property-owning” NPP NEVER displayed such disgusting opulence.

The base of the NDC shall soon begin to rise up and revolt against the stinking open opulence in the face of massive suffering in the Country.

President Mahama must wake up and crack the whip ooooo ….

Ayooo”.

He further added, “For those who are saying it is an old video clip, does it change the fact that the number plate of the vehicle has been customised?

Has any NPP MP ever customised his/her vehicle number plate?

Even if it is an old video clip, is it not very telling that it has resurfaced?

Continue defending the indefensible and walk your way into opposition”.

Koku Anyidoho further argued that there is no way the late President Rawlings and President Atta-Mills would allow that silly opulence.

“There is NO WAY this silly opulence would have happened under President Rawlings and President Atta-Mills.

President Mahama is seriously destroying the ethos of the NDC, and it is unacceptable”, he added.

Some Ghanaians reacting to Koku Anyidoho’s post stated, “What will kill you soon is vulgar bitterness. This woman was already using this kind of car even in opposition. Sir, please, sorry to ask, ooo, do you still have a wife? Cos your life and conduct do not depict that. A man of God???? Interesting”.

A netizen added, “Senior man, I think you are clutching at straws here. What is the opulence here, the personalised number plate, her car or both?

So many people have personalised number plates in the country; does that equate to opulence? This is a private vehicle”.

“MPs are given loans to buy a car

What is wrong with her car bearing her constituency name

Without the constituency, she won’t own the car”, a netizen added.

One X user argued, “This woman had her own money before politics na some of you NPP with low IQs never cease to amaze me

Kyeres3 gyimii no d))so oh🤦🏽

So what do you want us to do? Based on this, should we vote for NPP?

Chale make we think oo. You guys chop all the

Money, now we are trying to build Ghana again, then you people go carry your foolishness come this app top.

Nkosiafuo”.

“Sir, are you really for real? Even young boys all over Ghana are customising their number plates. We had a whole V8 that was carrying a chair around the country, and you were quiet. Today, you are talking because of the number plate? Goodness me!!”, one netizen noted.

“We are in a hopeless situation; gov’t has no clear-cut roadmap to solve Accra floods” – Miracles Aboagye

0

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has said the John Mahama government has no clear-cut roadmap to solve the Accra floods.

Meanwhile, Ken Agyapong, a former Assin Central Member of Parliament, has broken his silence concerning the flooding situation in Ghana, particularly in Accra.

According to Ken Agyapong, Ghana has been flooding since before independence, with 3,000 dead, 700,000 displaced, and $1 billion lost, not due to hurricanes or tsunamis.

He argued that the rains didn’t fail Ghana but Ghana failed itself.

In a post on X, Ken Agyapong wrote, “Ghana has been flooding since before independence.

3,000 dead. 700,000 displaced. $1 billion lost.

Not from hurricanes. Not from tsunamis.

From the gutters, we blocked ourselves. From waterways we built on. From warnings we ignored.

The rain didn’t fail us. We failed ourselves”.

“Fools will sleep with your future wives before you, if you delay your marriage” – KKD

0

Kwesi Kyei Darkwah (KKD), a veteran Ghanaian broadcaster and Presidential Special Envoy to the Caribbean, has said fools will sleep with one’s future wives before them if they delay their marriage.

In an interview which has gone viral on X, KKD opened up about the reason he decided to settle down at a young age.

According to him, his uncle advised him during his younger years against delaying marriage.

Speaking in an interview, Kwesi Kyei Darkwah stated, “I hope everyone gets a good marriage. I got married early because my uncle gave me some advice. He told me that even though I had no money, ladies were still all over me.

“He added that when I eventually got money, even more women would come around. But if I delayed marriage for too long, fools would be with the woman who would later become my wife. And I realised there was some truth in what he said,” he stated.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the video argued, saying, “A fool thinks marriage prevents women from sleeping around”.

“First off, no one is a fool. Second, big 2026 eno matter if you marry early or not, Dem dey eat your wife already”, one X user added.

A netizen added, “He is part of the fools then, someone who has been arrested for a case of sexual assault”.

“He’s actually making an argument for teenage marriage and paedophilia. Catch them young, or someone will chop am before you…SMH”, one X user added.

In related news, a Methodist Church Elder has urged members of the church’s Men’s Fellowship to consider marrying early rather than delaying marriage.

He also advised men to have their children within shorter age gaps.

According to the Methodist Church elder, early marriage enables men to fulfil their parental responsibilities earlier in life instead of spending their old age raising young children.

Speaking to Church members, the Methodist Church elder stated, “Get married early and have your children very early. It is very beautiful when you are growing, and your children are almost the same height as you. It is so beautiful.

You don’t also use your pension pay, and then your child is at KG or class one by the time you die, your child has not attained anything, so change your mind.

By 30, you are married, and if you want to have children, have it quick”, he added.

Meanwhile, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly has shared a new list of flood-prone areas as the capital region continues to deal with flooding and shared a list of flood-prone areas in a post on Facebook.

Also, President John Dramani Mahama has said the perennial flooding in Ghana’s capital, Greater Accra, is not an engineering problem.

According to John Mahama, the flooding in Accra is just a problem of indiscipline.

Speaking at a Town Hall meeting with Ghanaians in the diaspora on May 31st, 2026, explained, “The flooding in Accra is not an engineering problem. It is just a problem of indiscipline. It’s not an engineering problem; it’s a problem of indiscipline. We have drains, and everybody says ‘why don’t you do sealed drains?’ But the problem is, when we do sealed drains, people drink sachet water, they eat papaya in those styrofoam plastics, and they just dump them anywhere.

And these plastics wash into the drain, and they go and block the drain. And so if you have to unclog the drain, you have to remove all the drain covers and clean it out. You clean it out, and then again in the next three, four, five months, they have clogged again.

But that is not even the major problem. The major problem is the location of Accra. You have the Akuapim Mountain Range, and you have the Atlantic Ocean. Before people came to Accra, you had the Lafa stream, you had the Densu, you had the Sakumo stream, you had the Kole stream, you had the Odo stream — all of them were rainwater that falls in the mountains that flows through to the Atlantic Ocean”.

He further narrated, “Then you come and build a city in the path of those streams. What do you expect the streams to do? And even if you build, leave the courseways. If you come to London, you can see the canals in the city. If you go and build a house in that canal, where will the water go? It will go back into people’s houses.

Unfortunately, our traditional rulers are selling plots in streams. It’s not this ‘Nana nom’ I’m talking about, oh. We have places they call Ramsar sites. These Ramsar sites are wetlands. And they said that migratory birds come from Europe during the winter; they come and spend vacation with us in Africa.

Focus on delivery, and stop accepting ‘questionable’ awards — Mahama warn appointees

0

President John Mahama has directed all Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers of state institutions, and other political appointees to refrain from participating in, sponsoring, endorsing, attending, or accepting awards from private award schemes and related events unless expressly authorised by the Office of the President.

In a statement issued by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama read, “His Excellency the President has noted with concern the increasing trend of Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers of State Institutions, and other public officials participating in and accepting awards from various private organisations purporting to recognise them as the “best-performing”, “most outstanding”, or “most influential” public office holders.

In many instances, the organisations conferring such awards are largely unknown to the public, their credentials are unclear, and no transparent, objective, or verifiable criteria exist for assessing the performance of public officials. Consequently, the proliferation of such awards has the potential to undermine the integrity of public service, create misconceptions regarding government performance assessment, and expose the Government to /unnecessary public criticism and embarrassment.

Public office is a solemn responsibility entrusted to officials by the people of Ghana. Performance in the office cannot be measured by privately organised ceremonies or self-appointed acting. bodies, or commercial award schemes whose methodologies and standards are neither established nor subject to public scrutiny.

His Excellency, therefore, directs that all Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers of State Institutions, and other political appointees refrain from participating in, sponsoring, endorsing, attending, or accepting awards from such organisations unless expressly authorised by the Office of the President.

The government remains focused on delivering on its commitments to the people of Ghana. The true measure of the performance of Ministers and Chief Executive Officers is the extent to which they fulfil the policy objectives, programmes, and sector-specific targets outlined in the 2024 National Democratic Congress Manifesto, the Government’s development agenda, and the performance indicators agreed upon with their respective supervising authorities”.

The statement further added, “Accordingly, Ministers and Chief Executive Officers are reminded that their performance will be assessed based on tangible outcomes, measurable impact, effective service delivery, prudent management of public resources, and the successful implementation of Government policies and programmes.

The statement follows some big-name appointees of  President John Dramani Mahama who have been fingered in the cash-for-awards saga controversy surrounding the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards Scheme.

Suspended KATH CEO appeals to striking doctors and nurses to return to duty

0

Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, the suspended Chief Executive of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), has called on striking doctors and nurses to return to duty.

The suspended KATH CEO urged the striking staff of the hospital to return to duty, urging them to prioritise patient care.

In a statement issued from the Office of the Chief Executive on Monday, June 8, Dr Baidoo expressed appreciation to staff for what he described as their “show of solidarity”.

He, however, stressed the urgent need for staff to resume work “in the supreme interest of Ghanaians and valued patients.”

He further indicated that management would bring forward further decisions and directives to the “supreme wisdom” of the Minister of Health and the hospital’s governing board.

His statement follows, the Ministry of Health (MoH) in a statement who has said the decision to suspend the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, was taken in the interest of accountability.
